What happened to Walkers crisps??

They are such a mess, now. You open a packet to find a whole load of broken up mess, not shaped like crisps at all. Added to which they are burned at the edges and many of them are green. The price has gone up and the quality has gone down!

Pipers and kettle chips still look like crisps, luckily.

I've noticed that cheese and onion don't taste quite right.
It's odd though. If it's a bag from a 6 pack multi pack they taste odd but if I buy one of those £1.25 bags they usually taste delicious.
Do they come from different factories??

Walkers crisp addict for decades and I find they have very different production batches. Some batches are disgusting with wormhole-y potatoes, discoloured edges or just taste stale and oily. Others are better although I do agree that the quality has gone down significantly in recent years. I basically just check expiry dates to get an idea of the batch. If there's a bad one then I don't buy any other packets with the same expiry date.

I also noticed that single packs tend to be better than multipack or big ones. What does sometimes happen is that the bag gets accidentally pressed open inside a multipack. You know this if you squeeze it and there isn't any air pocket or resistance inside. There's usually a tiny hole somewhere which means the crisps inside are totally stale and taste off.

Also you get about 10 in a bag now. Very disappointing.

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · 28/01/2026 11:48

I’ve noticed this too! I only buy ready salted but frequently they just didn’t taste quite right. I’ve switched to Snacktastic from Lidl and they taste how I remember walkers to. More salty and oily and delicious.

I have found this too. They taste almost stale yet are well within their use by date. I wondered if they were using less fat...

Talipesmum · 28/01/2026 12:05

Just eaten a pack and they were same as ever, delicious, not crushed, good quality.

Ineffable23 · 28/01/2026 12:07

I think the big bags and the 6 bag multi packs seem different as well. The 150g bags seem as they were before.

I would say if you have problems with a packet and send a message to Walkers on their website giving the pack code, best before date etc, they are usually helpful and send you a voucher to apologise.

Thereinaminute · 28/01/2026 12:12

Potatoes had a rough few years with the wet weather so I expected they are using lower quality than they used to as they can't afford to be picky.

I see little difference between supermarket ready salted and walkers ready salted though.

Big packs of the fancy supermarket crisps or kettle chips are usually good.

I do remember about 15 years ago kettle chips suddenly went from being super thick and crunchy to more walkers style thin. I do miss the properly thick cut ones.

Mindbogglingx · 28/01/2026 12:13

I remember when walkers was 25p a bag and it was a full bag.
Soon we will open them and get the smell only.

Beakthrough · 28/01/2026 12:24

Oh. Interesting. I haven't noticed your issues but I bought a pack yesterday. I remember them as a treat, superior to other crisps. These tasted of slightly rancid oil. (Well in date).

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 28/01/2026 12:28

I’ve just eaten a massive sharing pack of ready salted and they were really oily. Definitely not as good as they used to be. My favourite is cheese and onion and they definitely don’t taste like they used to. I haven’t found a decent alternative though. I can’t stand any of the supermarket knock off versions of any of the flavours I like.

I agree, yet nothing stops me devouring about 12 packs of salt and vinegar a week. Pringles salt and vinegar are now where the real disappointment lies

I'm suprised you can't get candles in fragrance of their flavours 😂

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/01/2026 12:37

Dh opened a bag of Walkers Baked the other day. They weren’t broken although they usually are.

There were 8 crisps in it.

8 fucking crisps.

Oxo01 · 28/01/2026 12:38

I love it when I go abroad they have giant bags nearly full up ( cant recall the name) but they are lower cost and taste nice.

10p for Walkers and similar crisps.
Monster Munch were 13p ("Pennies Can't Buy a Bigger Snack").
Snaps were 7p.
Plus it was all fields around here....😂

Don't eat a Monster Munch pack from a multi pack.
You WILL be disappointed.

Lays?

Lays is the name for Walkers in some other countries.
They do giant bags and interesting flavours.
Don't try the mushroom flavour.
They were an abomination.

Caterpillar1 · 28/01/2026 13:10

I used to buy cheese and onion Pringles for my son, but stopped 2 months ago, cause he told me that something has changed and they don't taste good anymore.

Yes think that's them im sure

BeanQuisine · 28/01/2026 13:58

Never had crisps with wormholes in them, of any brand.

Things must be getting quite blighted back in Blighty.
