Teaching my Granny to suck eggs...

Lordy me - I used that in a convo this evening as it popped into my head from about aeons ago! I have three questions:

  1. When did it fall out of favour from general conversation?
  2. Am I the only one who's used it in decades?
  3. Does anyone still understand what it means?

I use it but then I have to try and explain it to those who have no idea… 🤦🏻‍♀️

DS is 32 and he actually used it to me a few weeks ago! So it's not totally dead.

I don’t use it much but definitely know what it means and I’m sure I’ve explained it to my children. I saw your thread and suddenly wanted a creme egg

Of course! I hear it all the time. I’m sure my Gen Alpha child knows what it means (not so much the autistic one - who is not so clued up on idioms)

I’m a teacher and googled “granny sucking eggs” to get a picture to add to a training PowerPoint I was making. We use it quite a lot as staff, normally mumbled at the end of an INSET. When I went to search something in class it came up in the recently searched bar and the class erupted. I looked such a weirdo! Had to do a lot of explaining of the phrase!
