Sons first birthday is coming up and no idea what to get him. He got a fisher price playbarn for Christmas and loves it. Has shape sorter, building blocks, mega blocks. My mum's got him a little rid on car.
Any ideas for a good gift?

We got ours a climbing kit and he loves it. He’s not big enough for all of the parts yet but it will grow with him which we love.

One of the little push along trikes? One is the perfect age to buy it as you'll get value out of it. They are normally suitable from 12 months until age 5.

This is a great idea he loves climbing anywhere currently haha! Have you got a link to this one as so many on amazon? Only problem will be storage as it looks big.

Here is the link

its not the smallest but you can put only parts out so that could make storage easier

Is there something that you think he might be needing before next winter? I was thinking of an outside toy .He is only a baby so doesn’t know about birthdays yet so I wouldn’t get anything for the sake of it but as Christmas and birthday are close together it’s a long time until the next present buying spree. Otherwise , thinking about DGDs one likes an interactive push button type toy and the other liked a doll’s pram and ‘baby’ from about this age.

We got dd a swing for the garden

The best gift my eldest got for her first birthday was a little ceramic mug (like a mini coffee/tea mug). Sounds like a random gift, but when all the baby/toddler toys were outgrown, that mug was still going. She’s 13 and though she doesn’t really use it anymore, we still have it, and it got regular use til she was probably 8/9.

Second vote for the climbing kit! We got one for dd and it got well used for several years. We got one that was just 2 pieces (so just the triangle frame and the slide/climbing wall, not the semi circular bit) because our house is very small and the triangle folds flat so easy for us to fold up and tuck the two pieces away somewhere. If you’re limited on space I recommend that but if you have the space the third piece is well worth it (nephew has the full set)

Do you really need to buy him anything, I didn't bother for the first couple of years.
Babies have no concept of birthdays and Christmas, save your money as you will certainly be spending plenty as they get older.

JoannaTheYodelingCowgirl · 25/01/2026 14:25

You don't have to get him anything, babies don't know its their birthday.
But I know some people are really keen on it so ideas i have may be:
Garden playsets like swing, slide
Electronic vtech/leapfrog thingies
Little teddy
New clothes and blanket
