Is it time to boycott the World Cup

MOntueslite · 24/01/2026 19:59

I know we all said this about the last World Cup. Ice have murdered a man in the street. Surely Europe can send a message and just say no.
It would be the ultimate humiliation for Trump

i boycotted the last world cup. And have been boycotting all internationals since then.

2026willbebetter · 24/01/2026 20:00

I don’t think Trump would care.

If enough countries boycotted he would care. He wouldn’t show it but he would be humiliated

Yeah - coz that’s gonna show trump.
coz he is waiting on the viewing figures coming through.

Octonaut4Life · 24/01/2026 20:02

I agree. The USA is not safe for the players or the fans. And we shouldn't be supporting a government that is murdering it's citizens in the streets with impunity.

I’m not talking about watching it. I mean countries refusing to attend and Compete

OP posts:
sprigatito · 24/01/2026 20:03

I think this is one of the few things he actually would care about.

Goldenbear · 24/01/2026 20:04

Yes, definitely. Money talks!

Oblivionnnnn · 24/01/2026 20:06

I’ve seen some people posting about this on IG but the thing is…I’m Scottish and we NEVER get to go! This is once in a lifetime stuff for Scotland. If the bigger European teams don’t drop out I can see why we should.

It doesn’t matter a fuck anyway. There was talk of Putin being humiliated at the last Olympics and really..as if he gave a single shit.

It would just increase the changes of the USA winning.

TheAutumnCrow · 24/01/2026 20:24

I wonder what Canada’s plans are? (This year’s World Cup will be jointly hosted by sixteen cities, eleven in the United States, three in Mexico, and two in Canada.)

I know it sits with each country’s football association, but there must be political pressures being brought to bear, especially with Trump now threatening Canada with 100% tariffs.

AhBiscuits · 24/01/2026 21:51

Yes I think it is time. Shift games to Canada and Mexico.

CalmShaker · 24/01/2026 22:12

Of course it should go ahead. Most sensible people can identify the difference between politics and sports

This 100%

Tinytimmy123 · 25/01/2026 06:33

For me it would be like going to a football match in Germany in the early 1940s. Giving them your money supporting their economy and ignoring the carnage going on around you.

Typically trumps 'apology' was a written one and probably written by someone else.

The Royal family should cancel their visit until he verbally apologises and tell him and the fifa sycophants to shove the world cup...but you know its 'football' and they wont.

There will be carnage during the world Cup...if theyre prepared to have ICE at the superbowl they'll do the same at the football matches. Don't fool yourselves into believing they wont jail, shoot or injure supporters. On principal I wouldnt go, but I also wouldnt go because as the shootings in Minneapolis demonstrate they don't give a damn who they hurt maim or kill if theyre so willing to kill their own.

Sometimes sport can be used to send a political message. This may be one of those times where it should be though I would feel very sorry for Scotland.

This. Of course sports and politics are different things but this would send a very strong message. I know it’s very hard on the smaller countries that don’t qualify every time.

I agree

The US is not safe for its own citizens let alone foreign players, fans, journalists...

The only way that would happen is if no other country took part

Sweetiedarling7 · 25/01/2026 08:28

I totally agree with a boycott.
Trump would feel it however he would spin that he didn’t care.
Americans would see our disdain.
Plus why would anybody want to travel to the dangerous shit hole America has become?

FreeTheOakTree · 25/01/2026 08:29

Whenindoubthugitout · 24/01/2026 20:02

Yeah - coz that’s gonna show trump.
coz he is waiting on the viewing figures coming through.

It is about much more than that though.

The empty stadiums, hotels, all of the economic ripple effects that come with hosting such a huge tournament.

I personally would love to see all European teams boycott the world cup.

scalt · 25/01/2026 08:31

I’ve seen videos how it would be extremely significant. The World Cup is a worldwide (for countries taking part) multi-billion dollar operation, and while Trump might be too childish to care, those behind the World Cup most certainly would care, very much indeed!

CalmShaker · 24/01/2026 22:12

Won't it be Trump handing the world cup to whoever wins? Politicians love that photo op and use the whole month ruthlessly to promote themselves and their countries because there is no higher profile event. The world cup is the biggest sport event in the world.

At the rate Trump is going the winning team is likely to be a country he has insulted. Would you like to shake hands with Dorito at the highest point of your professional career?

I know how many Europeans feel about him but I wonder what people in Latin America think. A boycott by both European and Latin American teams would render the world cup a joke and would be deeply humiliating for the organisers. It would be nice to see Japan or South Korea win, mind.

ApplebyArrows · 25/01/2026 08:37

I didn't watch the last one and am torn about this one. I used to really enjoy watching it and because I missed the last one it feels like it's ages since I last saw one and I miss that.

Sskka · 25/01/2026 08:53

Couldn’t we just let people enjoy things without dragging politics into everything? Imagine how much better life would be. Even better than the brief endorphin rush we get from looking like the good people!
