Newport - Wales. What’s it like?

LucyLennox · 24/01/2026 18:12

Thinking of moving to Wales to be nearer family now that kids are at uni and work have kicked us all out of the office to full-time WFH.

Have googled and it suggests the crime rate is high relative to the rest of Wales. Does anyone agree or have any opinions please? I’d be moving from the West Mids & property seems more affordable in Newport compared to here.

Avoid Newport itself!!
Surrounding areas are far nicer, towards Cardiff.
or consider Chepstow, Abergavenny, Monmouth or Usk.
Where are your family based?

Genxhausted · 24/01/2026 18:19

Newport is absolutely dreadful. Cheap for a reason and schools are awful. Look at Bassaleg, Caerleon , Rogerstone and Monmouthshire instead.

gototogo · 24/01/2026 18:20

It’s a bit rough, was told best to leave before 6pm on Saturdays by a local

user1471538283 · 24/01/2026 18:22

Have a look at Caerleon! We went there on holiday several years ago, it's not far from Newport and it's stunning.

Cardiff is an amazing city but the good areas will be expensive.

yeesh · 24/01/2026 18:22

It’s very deprived, it’s cheap for a reason. Will you need to find jobs when you move?

Livedandlearned · 24/01/2026 18:23

Don’t do it!

The suggestions above are good…

starrylightts · 24/01/2026 18:24

No, it's rough.

YesSirICanNameChange · 24/01/2026 18:24

Grim

Arlanymor · 24/01/2026 18:25

It's cheap because it's deprived. Caerleon is affordable - Abergavenny, Usk, etc. less so unless you're happy to downsize.

Marvellousmeadows · 24/01/2026 18:27

So this is will be an interesting thread as I live here. City centre is awful, such a shame as it’s full of beautiful Victorian buildings which are sadly mostly empty below or vape shops . There are some really nice residential areas on the outskirts Ridgeway, Bassaleg, Caerleon where there are nice big houses . Personally I avoid the city centre , Cardiff is ten minutes on the train or I go to Bristol . Newport does have nice parks, very commutable to other areas and not far from forests .

TheMoanerLisa · 24/01/2026 18:31

I wouldn't want to live in Newport itself but most of South Wales is lovely. Within a commutable distance of Bristol or Cardiff, the higher property prices will be. I guess it depends on where your relatives live and how close you want to be to them.

FebruaryUsername · 24/01/2026 18:46

As everyone else has said, Newport itself is rough - it is cheap for a reason. Some of the surrounding areas are much nicer though.

CharlotteSometimeslikesanafternoonnap · 24/01/2026 18:50

Newport used to be great. Then loads of money got poured into Cardiff and out of town shopping, leaving Newport as a ghost town. Add in fuckwit planners who destroyed a listed site and a council who couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery and it's now a very unloved place. This was preventable, but no-one cared enough to bother.

TomatoSandwiches · 24/01/2026 18:50

Shite, it's proper shite.

GlobalSpinNumpty · 24/01/2026 18:59

Google ‘Newport State Of Mind’ and watch it on YouTube (it’s still available on Lewis Nunn’s channel).

Brilliant parody song by Terema Wainwright and rapper Alex Warren, depicting Newport in all its concrete glory.

CrystalSingerFan · 24/01/2026 19:06

Well, I agree with PP's who suggest other places. Monmouth's lovely.

But if you choose Newport, do visit their Transporter Bridge over the river. It's a wonder and a marvel. One of the only remaining 6/7/8/9/11 transporter bridges left in the world, depending which internet source you believe.

However, when we visited, the lovely staff at the ticket kiosk told us that when local work was being done, to stop the local crims/yobbos, they had to park the digger/dumper on the bridge platform and move it to the centre of the brige to stop it being stolen/abused overnight. Not encouraging.

It’s not the best, but like many cities there are nice areas and not so nice areas. Agree it’s best to avoid city centre, but easy to go to Cardiff or Bristol!

I live here too and agree with this, there are some very nice suburbs and excellent links to Cardiff and Bristol. Ridgeway is on outskirts of a lovely nature reserve and the west side of the town is nice with lots of trees and beautiful old buildings. The town centre is no worse than most other towns but there is a decent retail park out of town. We are in Ridgeway, good and convenient location, decent pub, good local primary schools and my son and his friends are doing well in the local comprehensive school. There are some rough areas as with every town and city but we’ve never seen any trouble, have wonderful neighbours and and are very happy hear. Some great beaches, countryside and mountains within easy reach too.

Keroppi · 24/01/2026 19:25

I'd prob not move there but surrounding areas are nice. Great transport links to Cardiff tho and I suppose there are lots of shops. I don't think if be happy with my teens hanging around the town centre tho and going out there etc
I'd rather live in the valleys or surrounding areas round Cardiff and Newport like Caerleon or Cwmbran

My friends live in Caerphilly it's stunning and has a lot of families there. They live Bedwas area, I really enjoy visiting them
