Cheap holiday near Edinburgh

Dh goes away with work quite a bit and once a year I leave the dc with PIL and join him for a weekend. They pay "expenses" but it's less each year. This year it's not much at all so I am looking at really cheap accommodation and coming back with nothing under £170 for a weekend in June. Dh has suggested we sleep in the car which is what he mostly does when away with work but tbh I'd rather stay at home. Dh would be really disappointed though as it's the one time in the year that we get quality time together. Any tips for cheap accommodation? Haven are advertising holidays "from £49" but I can't see any that actually cost that much. I don't mind camping but I get up to go to the loo at least once a night so I need somewhere with toilets nearby. Not bothered about other facilities, just need somewhere we can sleep and go to the toilet.

if the alternative is sleeping in the car you could look at the Central Youth Hostel on Leith Walk. I think they have rooms for two. Parking might be an issue though, if you’re coming by car. There are other hostels in the city as well.

I’m from Edinburgh and I really don’t think you will find anything less in June I’m afraid.

newornotnew · 24/01/2026 16:35

I was also going to suggest the Youth Hostel.

A lot will depend when in June - the schools finish for summer at the end of June and a lot of people go on holiday in the last week.

The first two weekends at Seton Sands (the haven closest to Edinburgh) are around £180, but the last two are more.

If it’s for a weekend and you DH isn’t working you could try looking for accommodation in Linlithgow or Falkirk and get the train into Edinburgh. Maybe try Livingstone too.

I forgot schools finish earlier in Scotland. It's the third weekend in June. I've checked the youth hostel and there is nothing available that weekend.

Cheap accommodation isn’t really a think in Edinburgh, even the hostels aren’t particularly cheap! The nearest caravan site is at Seaton sands which is a good way out of the city. There’s a direct bus but it’ll take over an hour or you’d need to drive to wallyford for the train. Or there’s a campsite with pods and caravans at Mortonhall which is closer.
theres a few hotels at Edinburgh park which are often cheaper at weekend as it’s a business park.
or there’s youth hostel is very central (you’d need to find somewhere to park)

You get B&Bs and reasonably priced hotels and even some
caravan parks in Fife.

great train and bus links to Edinburgh

Timeandtune · 24/01/2026 16:56

Could you try university accommodation staying in halls of residence?

MiddleAgedDread · 24/01/2026 16:57

have a look on booking.com there’s rooms in Destiny student flats for under £150 in the city centre

MouldyCandy · 24/01/2026 16:58

Have a look at Mortonhall camping site. It's on the southern outskirts of town but the end of the drive is on a direct bus route into the city centre.
Alternatively there are a couple of Premier Inn type places near Dalkeith.

Thankyou. Dh will be working all weekend but we will have some time together in the evening and on his lunch break. At least I know now that nothing is cheap. Just got to decide whether to sleep in the car or not go now.

You could stay in Dunfermline which is a lovely small city by itself, and take the train or bus from there. I had a quick look on booking.com and for instance the 'Maltings Hotel' comes up for £133 for a Fri-Sun stay.

Nearly50omg · 24/01/2026 17:01

Go stay in fife and get the train into Edinburgh or drive over the bridge - 10-15 mins into town centre - or stay in fife which is much nicer really and a lot cheaper

Musicaltheatremum · 24/01/2026 17:12

Minto guest house and Edinburgh travel guest house just South of the city coming in at £130 for 2 nights 19-21 June.
These are on really good bus route. I used it regularly. Fairly basic 3 star but clean and easy to get into the city centre. Lots of others on that route. I used Google maps with those dates.

ElizabethsTailor · 24/01/2026 17:15

South Queensferry or Livingston PremierInns are within your budget

MiddleAgedDread · 24/01/2026 17:18

Where will you sleep in the car??

FinallyHere · 24/01/2026 17:39

Another vote for Dunfifmline which is pretty but cheaper hotels not great, even better Glenrothes and community into Edinburgh. Enjoy.
