Half a stone gain in a week!!!

Bloodyhellhowdidthathappen · 24/01/2026 09:04

I am at least 6 pounds heavier than a week ago! (Weighed in morning after going to loo, heavier last night)

i don’t think it’s water retention as I barely drink any water which I need to change. I have simply eaten too much.

i have probably had too many carbs and salt but I don’t feel bloated, very full. Half a stone would indicate significant overreacting, maybe I have been worse than I realise. I can barely button my jeans.

I guess I significantly reduce my food for the next week and see what happens!

Have never detoxed - lots of liquids, not much food I assume?!

It wont be fat. For it to be fat you would need to have eaten 24,500 calories over your normal maintenence. I dont think you understand water retention. Not drinking much water / fluid is partly what causes it. Lots of salt, wheat etc in your diet, things like takeaways will bloat you and show on the scale.
Eat fresh food, drink water and reduce salt for a week and you will see a difference.

The one time I gained weight like that, it was due to HRT.
are you on any new treatments or medication?

ButWhysTheRumGone · 24/01/2026 09:34

Weighing at night will add at least 2lbs to a morning weight. Always weigh at the same time of day and wearing preferably nothing. My pjs weigh 300g for example. My watch weighs 50g. Having breakfast adds a pound. Consistently is important. Carbs need water to be processed by the body. Drink more and weigh again in a morning once you’ve been to the loo and I bet you’ll see you haven’t gained as much as you think.

Gggh · 24/01/2026 09:36

Agree with @Twoshoesnewshoes

Otherwise is there anything different about the way you used the scales. If mine aren’t completely level they can be off by a few kg.

gamerchick · 24/01/2026 09:38

Not drinking enough will make you retain water. Give your kidneys a treat.

MilkToastHoney · 24/01/2026 09:44

You need to weigh every day (ideally at the same time - ie, always before breakfast) and take an average for the week.

Weight fluctuates daily, depending on what you’ve eaten/water retention from carbs etc, your cycle will also fluctuate your weight.
If you’ve increased exercise or changed your exercise, your weight will temporarily increase due to muscle inflammation/water retention.

Weighing only once a week won’t give you an accurate weight loss/gain and can be disheartening if you weigh on a heavy day.

hby9628 · 24/01/2026 09:45

I put on 2lb the other day then I was 3lb down the next. It’s ridiculous! I bloat very easily so if I had a week of eating carbs I would also put on 7lb
just be sensible this week and I’m sure it will drop off

Bloodyhellhowdidthathappen · 24/01/2026 10:24

I did realise salt causes water retention but thought as I had been a bit dehydrated that count not have happened. Think I have that wrong, internet suggesting could cause more retention.

I will try drink more.

i definitely had more carbs. Had sandwiches a few days which I don’t normally do.

I can easily put on half a stone the week before my period, hormones play a big part.

Decoding21 · 24/01/2026 16:41

It may be nothing, and sorry to worry you if it is, but if the weight gain around your waist doesn't settle in a week, you need to see your GP for blood tests, including a Ca-125, and for them to arrange pelvic scans as this could be a sign of ovarian cancer

mindutopia · 24/01/2026 18:29

If you aren’t drinking much water, that will do it.

Water has zero calories. If you’re trying to lose weight, drinking loads of water is the best thing you can do.

A few sandwiches won’t have made any difference. What’s your alcohol consumption like?

My guess is this is a bit related to dehydration and a bit related to natural fluctuations. I am not trying to lose weight, but I can easily vary by about 3kg from day to day.

Only on MN.

You don't need a pelvic scan, OP. You need to drink more water and probably lay off the bread for a few days.

I know someone who weighs 5 stone heavier in the evening then they do in the morning, as said salty carbs

Please ignore this I have used the calculator incorrectly, will update later

No alcohol but I thought about what I have eaten and definitely more than usual. Even yesterday when I tried to be healthier, I made thick lentil and vegetable soup for a couple of days and ate it all in one day.
Combined with maybe 2 glasses of water and the rest or my fluids being caffeine all week.
and zero exercise.
Been out for dinner today so fresh start tomorrow!

I hit 90kg, bang on, last Friday morning (was exactly 93 on New year's Eve). Gradually getting the holiday and Xmas weight off but by bit and stable. Exercise, better diet (no refined carbs, sweet treats etc). Was away Friday - Sunday evening with provided food. Ate some pizza, drank some alcohol, food was generally crap (though I had no other refined carbs than Friday night pizza) and I didn't eat as much as normal. Weighed around 92kg on Monday. Has taken until today to get 89.95, digesting and removing all that shit while eating normally.

I weigh daily - get up, piss, weigh. Scales in same place, nothing on.

hby9628 · 25/01/2026 09:26

@Damnloginpopupmy weigh routine is the same as yours. Last Monday I was 3lb up over the weekend. By this fri I had lost 4lb.
I only actually track my weight on a Fri for this reason. It’s crazy how much it fluctuates.

LookingThroughGlass · 25/01/2026 09:32

6lb gain is likely to be largely fluid - it would be difficult to gain 6lb of fat in that short space of time. It could be water retention or it might be that you were dehydrated the last time you weighed yourself and are properly hydrated now.

If by any chance you are constipated, that won't help either - an average poo weighs about half a pound.

I would suggest tracking what you eat next week, limiting salt intake and drinking plenty of water. If you are still gaining, check your TDEE and make sure you are staying within that, or below it if you are aiming to lose rather than maintain weight.

reversegear · 25/01/2026 09:50

If I increase my HRT dose like I’m doing now I can gain 3-4kg in a week and it’s not water related as I drink lots eat the same proteins etc.

id love to be believed and a study to be done on HRT and weight as it’s always dismissed, and yet here I am, if I lower the patches back to 50 twice a week I will loose the weight.

so OP not sure in your hormones but for me it would be possible to gain that.
