Lighthearted! What thing did you say you'd do as a sign you'd 'made it'?

I always said I'd know I'd 'made it' (whatever that means!) When I could go to M&S for my weekly shop!

DHs made it moment is when he can wake up on a spontaneous Saturday and decide to take us to Paris on a whim! (We are in UK)

Obviously his more exciting than mine but I guess for both it's about having enough disposable income to not feel guilt about 'luxury spontaneous' buys!

What are yours? Achieved? Gave you the thrill you thought?
(Ours as yet unacheived haha!)

I knew I'd made it when I didn't feel the need to show off about materialistic stuff. I hope you lot don't talk like this out in the real world.

There is always one 😅

The beauty of the answers is how they are rarely about showing off but treating the people we live and the small things that mean something to us!

I always planned to get a cleaner! Still not achieved it!!!

mamaduckbone · 24/01/2026 17:00

Having more alcohol in the house than we are planning on drinking that night (achieved…quite a modest ambition!)
Doing the weekly shop in Waitrose
(definitely not achieved - firmly Lidl/Aldi with a few Waitrose treats now and then)

Fodencat · 24/01/2026 17:06

I think I peaked when I no longer had to do any ironing. I took what needed ironing to the dry cleaners for them to do. Utter bliss

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 24/01/2026 18:11

Fridge with an ice dispenser! We have one now which is very exciting! It even does ice chips as well as cubes! Little me would be very impressed.

Chiefangel · 24/01/2026 18:13

Buying own brand foods, outside hot tap and having an en-suite 😂 I am easily pleased.

Efrogwraig · 24/01/2026 18:19

Buying books in hardback. Not having to wait for the paperback.

And simply being able to do a supermarket shop without worrying.

bumphousebump · 24/01/2026 18:25

I remember giving a work colleague a lift and she was amazed that I just filled up the tank and didn’t just put say £20 in….it gave me pause for thought.

Beesandhoney123 · 24/01/2026 18:28

Take the dc out for lunch or dinner without worrying about the effect on the budget.
I did manage to take my elderly dm on a weekend abroad to somewhere she had always wanted to go, without scrimping. That was lovely:) god I miss her.

Thundertoast · 24/01/2026 18:28

This is such a lovely thread.

I have been incredibly lucky to meet most of mine!

  1. Rent a place, solo. Done! In my early twenties.
  2. Meet the 30k salary mark. I honestly thought this was rich beyond my wildest dreams, and while my salary has increased since then, im delighted that I've not fallen foul of the mentality some people get of 'well yes, I earn double/triple the national average but its not a fortune, i have high outgoings!!' because they have literally chosen to do things that increase their outgoings and have mates on 100k+....it still feels like an absolute fortune to me 💜
  3. Edited to add - my only one left is to somehow end up on a work trip to a specific country - its a fun dream but I probably wont get it now!
katscamel · 24/01/2026 18:30

Several years ago on getting a pretty decent first month's salary I bought a Tiffany bracelet.... it wasn't just the bracelet but the joy of going into the shop. Nowadays ... it'd be not haveing to worry about my luggage being a couple of kg over the allowance

boniobiscuit · 24/01/2026 18:31

Always flying business class on long haul and as much as I can short haul too.

dnac · 24/01/2026 18:32

underfloor heating and a wine fridge in the kitchen. Unnecessary but equally felt like it wasn’t a proper kitchen refurb without them.

Chinsupmeloves · 24/01/2026 18:35

Being able to whip out my card and say tonight's on me for a family meal.
Buying some expensive items DH wanted as a random gift.
Driving on the highway in America.

I think it's more that I could afford it than making it. That would be a mansion, first class travel etc.

However, personally, knowing I've helped my loved ones to be happy is the most important thing in the world. Xxx

houseofisms · 24/01/2026 18:44

Paying off my mortgage (5 bed coastal house) but that was due to me getting cancer (I’m fine now) and having good life insurance with critical illness

Diegolikestheclassics · 24/01/2026 18:45

Just being like my parents. They don't have to think about money generally.

I love watching them shop. All the expensive, nice things and the big versions of them.

And not having to worry about things like buying new car tyres out of the blue. Not having to think, I'll do that this month and a boiler service next month to balance the cost.

They do bigger things like a very fancy cruise soon but it's the everyday, relaxation about money that would make me feel I'd 'made it'.

FlorianTV · 24/01/2026 18:54

When people can both afford and have space in their kitchen for an island.

deffo agree about a weekly shop in M&S! Whenever I pop in for a treat I always think these are my people, I belong here it’s so unfair that I can’t do my full shop here!

blankcanvas3 · 24/01/2026 18:56

We had our first DC when we were very young and there were lots of conversations about money and whether we could afford it (spoiler - we couldn’t!), but then 13 years later when we had our second, money wasn’t a factor at all in whether we had her or not. That’s when I thought ‘we’ve done it :)’

TheeNotoriousPIG · 24/01/2026 19:06

Mine would be having the two things that I was Not Allowed Until I Left Home: a dog and a piano. When my mother comes to visit, she greets the dogs, plays the piano, and then remembers that she hasn't greeted me!

A bonus is that people said that my dog would never make it as a working dog because she lives in the house. Having been to sheepdog boarding school, she would beg to differ. She will have you know that works hard and clearly deserves her home comforts!

Next on the list is having a house and smallholding of my own, with chickens, bees, and growing my own fruit and vegetables.

BrummiMummi · 24/01/2026 19:09

Go to the supermarket and not worry about what I spent - feel so fortunate that after years of hard work I am there

Theboredpanda · 24/01/2026 19:13

Have a kitchen island. Only achieved a mobile ikea one so far 😢

FairyGardensx · 24/01/2026 19:17

Having monthly massages and mini ones in between.

FlyHighLikeABird · 24/01/2026 19:19

I am the same as someone else on here- I wanted more than anything to get my Nokia flip phone and my Clinique three-step products. I got them.

I don't spend that much on cleansers now, not worth it!

Now my 'made it' satisfaction is to have the tumble drier on so I don't have to have clothes hanging around the house making everything damp, and having the heating on when I want.

My next 'made it' goal is to have a cleaner come two or three times a week to organise my house, do the food, clean, keep everything ticking along. I've had a cleaner once a week and now I'm not having a cleaner at all due to a lean year.

My dream is just to write and not have to worry about the house. I think it will happen in the next two to three years.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 24/01/2026 19:30

Still waiting but l live in hope.

A heated indoor swimming pool all to myself. To swim and exercise my aching joints.

Heaven in Paradise.

🏊🧜🌞

Xxx
