Lighthearted! What thing did you say you'd do as a sign you'd 'made it'?

I always said I'd know I'd 'made it' (whatever that means!) When I could go to M&S for my weekly shop!

DHs made it moment is when he can wake up on a spontaneous Saturday and decide to take us to Paris on a whim! (We are in UK)

Obviously his more exciting than mine but I guess for both it's about having enough disposable income to not feel guilt about 'luxury spontaneous' buys!

What are yours? Achieved? Gave you the thrill you thought?
(Ours as yet unacheived haha!)

Buy all my clothes from Karen Millen. Unachieved because it’s not 2001 anymore and I couldn’t squeeze one thigh in the largest size these days.

I achieved this a few years back and was gutted at the cut/quality and lack of lining for such a pricey dress. I ordered it online and it was in the sale but still, I sent it back and never yearned after Karen Millen ever again. I do love Kate Spade handbags.

I think being able to book a spontaneous holiday would be on my list. Also never worrying about car bills (we have an expensive one coming and the not knowing how much is stressful.

My achieved one would be being able to let dc go on the school ski trip (then I went and had 3dc including twins so it’s a double whammy this year, but we can cover it).

This isn’t quite what you’re asking, but Dh and I realised we made it when we didn’t run out of heating oil and have to shove a brick under one side of the tank to keep the heating going. 😂 We actually started buying oil before it ran out and laughed that we were finally proper adults now. We were 40 at that point!

Pay someone to iron my bedding and / or have it washed and returned like a hotel service

I just said those exact words a few days ago. I never iron anything but I make an exception for my white 400 thread count bedding, I love climbing into bed when it’s first changed.

TheSunRisesInTheEast · 24/01/2026 10:17

A weekly back, neck & shoulder massage would be bliss for me 🙏

Buy an original piece of art. For myself just because I like it.

I’m with you there.
Hasn’t happened.
So often I see paintings I’d love to buy but just can’t justify the price and too many other things that need spending on - leaky roof etc.
Some day…….

I’ll bet you children made her feel like she had a dream achieved she didn’t realise she wanted.

It may’ve been hard work, but for her having all her children pitching in and working together to make her shopping a little easier, probably gave her so much comfort.

i remember helping my mum shop every week, we had no car, and it was a case of catching buses, and ticking off the shopping list, then sharing all the shopping bags between us for the bus journey home.

The “treat” was that she always bought a fresh (still warm) loaf of bread in the “plait” design.
We would sit on the bus together, and she would tear off chunks of that warm fresh loaf, and by the time we arrived at our home bus stop, half the loaf had been devoured 🤭

i do believe it’s not necessarily money that makes us rich, but the shared love, and us all pulling together (like you did for your mum), that is way more valuable and can never be purchased, no matter how much money one has.

Im sorry you lost your darling mum, but I’m thinking she would rather have what she shared with you than a trip to M &. S with a “posh” basket. 🥰

This is so wholesome!!

My dream in the nineties was to be able to buy clothes from Monsoon.
Not sure if I've achieved it or not as I've lots of clothes from Monsoon, but I bought them all on eBay.

Ha! Similar to yours but shopping at Waitrose!

Seagroves · 24/01/2026 11:54

Although actually I prefer M&S now…

MushyPeasAndMintSauce · 24/01/2026 12:08

I grew up in financial insecurity which meant heating wasn't a given and for me the best thing is I can do is switch the heating on as I'm just a bit chilly I actually don't regularly it's so ingrained to put extra layers on but I can. So I would describe it as I can afford comfort.

That’s so lovely thank you. We did indeed have a fun childhood. We often reminisce about how hard our mum and dad worked for us and feel a bit sad that she’s not around now that we all have enough to treat her.

But she knew she was loved and I expect those M&S ladies with their wicker baskets have yearnings of their own.

Nourishinghandcream · 24/01/2026 12:26

I clearly remember saying just this, the pleasure & relief were all consuming "Yes.............. I've MADE it!"😀
I had just got the keys to my second house and it was while I was walking around taking it all in.

Bought my first house at 22, a decent enough 3-bed house but requiring COMPLETE updating and was located in a horrible street in a less than desirable part of a town that I did not want to live in (but was all I could afford as it was the first rung on "the ladder").
Spent the next 3yrs redecorating throughout while my Ddad made lots of improvements resulting in a nice little nest but still in a manky area in a town I hated.

At 25 with some equity behind me, additional savings and more earning potential, I moved to a lovely modern house in a nice CDS in a lovely village some 40miles away where I stayed for the next 30yrs.
Still remember it to this day. Opening my new front door, walking from room to room and saying out loud
"Yes.............. I've MADE it!"

TheNightingalesStarling · 24/01/2026 12:33

I've just bought DD school shoes AND trainers, plus lunch in McDonald's, despite it being at the end of the month.

Without thinking about it.

Newbie8918 · 24/01/2026 15:07

Fly first class whenever I book a flight. I managed to do it just once (and for only one leg) for our honeymoon. EasyJet is still my go to but I lived a little bit of my dream.
Im absolutely loving reading these! ❤️

shellster80 · 24/01/2026 15:13

just to be financially stable and not be constantly counting every penny. Be able to go to Tesco and not have to use the scanner going round as I’ve only got a very small budget and absolutely cannot go over it or will have the embarrassment of putting things back/having card declined. I have a teen son too so being able to buy him new clothes when he needs them instead of him having to wait or scouring Vinted for the cheapest item in the most decent quality (nothing wrong with Vinted, I love it but would be nice to just go to the actual shop and buy what’s needed)
Although currently Just basically knowing that all the bills will be paid every month and I can afford the petrol to get to work with would do!

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 24/01/2026 15:15

I knew I'd made it when I didn't feel the need to show off about materialistic stuff. I hope you lot don't talk like this out in the real world.

TaffetaPhrases · 24/01/2026 15:16

One day when I realised that i hadn’t checked my bank balance for a few weeks

but previous to that, a boy friend with a job, matching underwear sets and a Nokia were the pinnacle of my dreams

Oopsylazy · 24/01/2026 15:22

Having a bath whenever I wanted without having to switch the immersion heater on for an hour beforehand or wait for other people to have theirs first.

Having an actual shower - not just a bath (didn’t have one growing up).

Having heating and not just one gas fire in the front room.

Having a house that wasn’t mouldy and damp.

I remember when I met my dh going out in the very nice area he lived in and thinking “wow, I wouldn’t mind living here one day”.

All now achieved - so I guess I’ve “made it” 😂

I hope you’re not that tone deaf and miserable in the real world to come on a lighthearted thread and chastise everyone for talking about their dreams when they were younger.

Because if so - do you know like you have no friends and people avoid you in the street? Thats why.

MissHollyGolightly · 24/01/2026 15:25

Some people forgot this is light hearted! I’d love to fly first class/business, specifically for overnight flights. Did it once switching with DH flying for work and once I got randomly upgraded, but even with good income now I just couldn’t bring myself to pay that much.

I think a Chanel bag and a Jaguar would be my beacons since teen years but the prices only keep spiralling and as above I can’t bear to pay that much even if it’s possible.

My frugal childhood taught me to always consider price and value so it’s hard to “splurge.” Which is fine because I don’t want entitled DC.

This, but I’ve always said to have fresh bedding EVERY day and someone else to do the work!

OneFootAfterTheOther · 24/01/2026 15:40

Weekly shop in m&s. As a child our neighbour used to give us m&s fruit occasionally as a treat - I loved it. I always thought “when I grow up…”

SardinesOnButteredToast · 24/01/2026 15:45

I said I'd get a nice coffee, like a silly sugary cream treat type, and sit in a beautiful public garden surrounded by gorgeous architecture near my work and I'd sit in the warm light and just breathe. I thought I'd do that in 2015 but I kept grinding and just never felt the internal peace I'd expected so I knew it wouldn't feel right. I really think this year is the year so I'm just waiting for warmer weather and a sunny after work evening. So glad I'm finally here.

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 24/01/2026 15:46

throw away the odd sock box and buy new socks for the whole family that are all the same so there will no no more odd ones!

AIBUptight · 24/01/2026 15:56

Unachieved: but I would LOVE to get my hair washed and dried/straightened weekly at the hairdressers. I always feel fab after getting my hair done, and can never achieve the same myself (very thick and bushy hair) - would be such an indulgence.
