Lighthearted! What thing did you say you'd do as a sign you'd 'made it'?

I always said I'd know I'd 'made it' (whatever that means!) When I could go to M&S for my weekly shop!

DHs made it moment is when he can wake up on a spontaneous Saturday and decide to take us to Paris on a whim! (We are in UK)

Obviously his more exciting than mine but I guess for both it's about having enough disposable income to not feel guilt about 'luxury spontaneous' buys!

What are yours? Achieved? Gave you the thrill you thought?
(Ours as yet unacheived haha!)

Love this! Drive to my sister’s house in the middle of the night, knock on the door and tell her I was paying all of her bills, mortgage and giving her money. (I always said in the middle of the night, I think for shock value, now I think I might change this and do it in the day were I ever to get rich- it seems cruel otherwise 😅) The M & S one is good, I always said my other dream was I’d shop for our clothes in Next!

ps I hope people get to achieve their dreams!!

I’d know I’d made it when I had a pet of my very own 😻

Achieved!

And then overachieved. And now I have several elderly, senile, medically complex pets.

Don’t peak too young, is my advice.

This made me laugh!

Me: one of those gorgeous Orangeries you see in the Sunday Times supplement, with bespoke blinds and UV absorbing glass, roof lantern, plus rattan furniture from John Lewis and a kitchen area for breakfasts and little snacks.

DH: new purpose built camper, at least £200k worth.

as you can tell we regularly fantasise about winning the Euromillions!

Flying business class was a big one for me when I was younger. When I eventually did it in my late 20s I took advantage of the bubbly in the lounge and ended up falling asleep just after takeoff and missing the whole flight 😭

They woke me up half an hour from London with a coffee, gutted!

mrssunshinexxx · 24/01/2026 06:28

@JohnWickAteMyHamster that’s lovely it made me smile 😊

shopping in m and s and having oliver bonas homeware 😄 probably really silly but makes me happy

MummyInTheNecropolis · 24/01/2026 06:54

Having a breakfast bar with high stools in my kitchen - I always thought they looked so sophisticated. I have one now and we never, ever use it 😅🤦‍♀️

Tiredofitallagain · 24/01/2026 07:58

Some really amazing ones!!
If I win the euro millions I'll donate to all these ideas!!

15 years ago I wanted to earned enough to get my nails done every couple of weeks. I can technically afford it now but wouldn't choose to do it. So I need a new marker of success - going to nab the paying for dinner one upthread.

My mum’s was the M&S thing. It included using a wicker basket to put the lovely things in.
I think it may have been a wistful yearning to be responsible only for herself as she had five children starting at age 17 and we had no money and no car so shopping was fetched by the seven of us hauling plastic bags home on the bus. Poor mum.She died young so never achieved her dream.

I’ll bet you children made her feel like she had a dream achieved she didn’t realise she wanted.

It may’ve been hard work, but for her having all her children pitching in and working together to make her shopping a little easier, probably gave her so much comfort.

i remember helping my mum shop every week, we had no car, and it was a case of catching buses, and ticking off the shopping list, then sharing all the shopping bags between us for the bus journey home.

The “treat” was that she always bought a fresh (still warm) loaf of bread in the “plait” design.
We would sit on the bus together, and she would tear off chunks of that warm fresh loaf, and by the time we arrived at our home bus stop, half the loaf had been devoured 🤭

i do believe it’s not necessarily money that makes us rich, but the shared love, and us all pulling together (like you did for your mum), that is way more valuable and can never be purchased, no matter how much money one has.

Im sorry you lost your darling mum, but I’m thinking she would rather have what she shared with you than a trip to M &. S with a “posh” basket. 🥰

Pay someone to iron my bedding and / or have it washed and returned like a hotel service

LupaMoonhowl · 24/01/2026 08:32

When I just booked the short term car park and the premium lounge at the airport while away on holiday for a week.

FusionChefGeoff · 24/01/2026 08:32

DD(11) has said hers is to go to a new fancy hotel every Friday night

Tupperwarefan · 24/01/2026 08:32

As a 26yo, my first big bonus, I bought myself a Longines Conquest.

I've still got it. It needs a new bracelet which I cannot afford 😁

MsPug · 24/01/2026 08:34

For me it was when my dh got his annual bonus it wasn't used to pay off the credit card we'd had to use all year.

Being able to do the big shop without checking the price of everything and mentally adding it up on the way round the supermarket. I’m very comfortable now and I still feel like the queen of the world to be able to throw smoked salmon or a nice bottle of wine into the trolley without worrying about my card being declined.

bumphousebump · 24/01/2026 08:41

Doing the weekly shop in M&S. Not having to worry about vets bills. Weighing up flying business class. Booking taxis back from seeing friends, £40 taxi ride rather than an hour on the bus and a 30 minute walk uphill.

picking up the bill when taking family out for tea.

A small holiday home/bolthole which I would happily share with friends and family so long as I could leave my things and regularly disappear to.

I came on to say this. I very much doubt it will ever happen without some sort of lotto win

CloseEncountersOfTheLoveKind · 24/01/2026 08:44

Hi, I’ve had two ideas of what I thought would “prove”that I’d “made it”.

The first was more than fifty years ago as a newly married woman that was struggling to make ends meet with my husband.

On a Sunday, I’d often go for a walk around the “well off” peoples housing, you know, the huge detached houses with turn around driveways.

I regularly saw a particular house, where the lady was “gardening”.
She’d be wearing beautifully fitted WHITE trousers, and a top of some kind, she’d have a wicker trug in which to place her cut flowers.

It then became my ambition to have enough money to not bat an eyelid about doing dirty work in white trousers🤭

It never happened, and as I matured, my ambitions evolved.

My current “dream” is to have a MASSIVE kitchen, and to have people over to teach them all about nutrition and creating recipes with my “students” in my fabulous kitchen, that would benefit them, and so bring me joy to see them improve their health conditions.

im not holding my breath that it will happen, but always uplifting to dream a dream.

OP thank you for the thread subject 🥰

The same as @Politicians247UnderwearExtinguishingService

I achieved it many years ago and have to remind myself sometimes that other people can't do this. It really is amazing to not have to worry about the everyday bills and doing a weekly shop. To just know you have enough money in the bank. I would add too that being able to afford to just book a holiday. I'm not talking about a £20k fancy holiday, just something. You fancy a weekend or a week away, so you just book it and know you can afford it. Lovely!

There were many years where by halfway through the month my bank account was in the red and the misery of never having any money, never being able to treat yourself, always penny-pinching, I will never forget it.

PurpleFresias · 24/01/2026 08:55

what a lovely thread. I can resonate with PP re not worrying about food/car/vet bills etc, and it's made me realise how much peace comes with the lack of anxiety around these expenses

CarrieMoonbeams · 24/01/2026 09:00

When I was a child I always wanted to buy a Lucky Bag from the sweetie shop but pocket money was so unreliable and so mean (not poor as such, just a financially controlling Dad) that I wouldn't risk it in case there was something in there that I didn't like. My brother and I used to talk about "when we're rich" we'd buy 2 Lucky Bags each!

As an adult, I always wanted one of those big wicker hampers from F&M, full of lovely things. We finally treated ourselves a few years ago and actually ended up with 2, because a bottom corner of the first one had been slightly damaged in transit so they sent us another one. Result!

Twolargewatersplease · 24/01/2026 09:02

I saw Jon Bon Jovi smoking a £50 note on the cover of (I think) 'Q' magazine once and that became my ambition, to be rich enough to do that one day 😆
Not achieved and to be honest I doubt I'd do it even if I became a millionaire, I still don't like waste and never will!
