Things you'd forgotten about

String art.

Remember those pictures that hung on walls in the 70s/80s (? I'm guessing)
They usually had a black background and coloured string making geometric type patterns.
I had totally forgotten (most probably for the best 😂) that they had ever existed until I looked through some photo albums at my auntie's house.

Anything else of that ilk you can recall?

Coloured toilet paper.

It's like we all agreed to stop making and using it, and to never mention it again.

That loo roll in schools that was like tracing paper!

Our teacher actually used to hand sheets of it round class for us to trace diagrams! 😅 1980s schooling in 1870s built school. The claim was soft toilet paper blocked the Victorian plumbing, but we all (girls school) kept a roll of soft stuff in our bags to use anyway, because, as one classmate put it, that Izal stuff "doesn't absorb anything!"

Does anyone remember the stalls that popped up absolutely everywhere selling these shoes?

What you could do was pull the drawers half out and a couple of pens to tease out above and so on.

You were obviously an expert at this!

They still had a stall like that at our indoor market until very recently, until the council decided to revamp the place into a 'street food' venue. I miss the quirky stalls.

This kind of thing...

Vintage Nail art pictures are quite pricey to buy.

AnotherExpatKiwi · 24/01/2026 17:48

Velvet art like this one. Which happens to be sitting on a doily.

Crocheted everything. Wade Whimsy for sure - I had one of a corgi I was especially proud of, as we had a corgi called Samantha.

Loud splodgy patterned carpets.

Those bead seat covers for your car. Every car seemed to have them. Supposedly helped you with backache on long journey. Never had one so idk if they worked.

The CB Radio craze.

Those green sunvisor strips to put on your car windscreen with Tracy and Wayne pay on them. Or whatever. I remember seeing one during the Jeremy Thorpe scandal where some wag had put Jeremy and Norman.

My son and Dil arrived at my house for the weekend years ago and presented me with a grotesque picture very similar to that one. My daughter in law’s gran had died a few weeks previously and she told me it was her gran’s favourite picture and she wanted me to have it.

I was thinking FFS but said to my lovely Dil that was really thoughtful of her. I knew she was sad about her gran and I thought I’ll accept it graciously and hide the monstrosity till the next time they visit. About 2 hours later the cheeky feckers burst out laughing and told me they’d bought it in the £ shop to see if I’d fall for it 😆

Silverbirchleaf · 24/01/2026 18:13

@tobee I’d completely forgotten about those sun visor strips. You saw them in every boy racer car.

Silverbirchleaf · 24/01/2026 18:42

Washing your hair twice with shampoo. I don’t remember conditioners being a thing growing up, or maybe my dm only brought shampoo. Don’t remember when I started using conditioners with shampoos - nineties?

tobee · 24/01/2026 18:49

You can still buy them @Silverbirchleaf, if you want one!

Those little turtle figures you used to get in kinder surprises, especially the one where he's biting into a watermelon wedge

I have that one! My mum kept them all, DC love playing with them! The turtles were my favourite collection, as well as the crocodiles!

CeliaCanth · 24/01/2026 20:48

Smurfs. Little blue gnome-like creatures, from memory. I’m sure that the figurines were given away with petrol purchases? I managed to collect quite a few.

B film at the cinema , then an ice cream lady at the front selling Icecreams in the interval before the feature film started

Ours used to stand at the front and bellow “Would anyone like my services?” Cue much sniggering from early teenage me and friends.

RabbitFurCoat · 24/01/2026 22:59

My childhood home had pine panelling, a fixed blue velour breakfast room sofa (also boxed in with pine, as was my bed!) and a corner bath with mirror tiles on two sides with a massive printed image of an old sailing ship on the sea over the top of it. My grandma had gilt framed mirrors with flower pictures painted or printed on them, my mum inherited them. I also had an inflatable drinks holder for the bath in the shape of an island with a palm tree on it - I don't think it worked very well, it just ended up being used as a base for the action figures to jump off in the bath. Sometimes when I look at family photos I find it hard to believe how different the styles were. I barely noticed things changing but the distance between then and now is so pronounced, style wise.

It was strange going shopping on a Sunday wasn’t it! Sunday was the boring day, only the paper shop opened up our way and shut at one.
Suddenly we could go out 10 till 4 for actual shopping!
It really was a big deal and a big debate how it was ‘ the thin edge of the wedge ‘ ! Lol

Oh, I miss our local paper shop! Used to love the massive array of newspapers and magazines.

RabbitFurCoat · 24/01/2026 23:05

UnctuousUnicorns · 23/01/2026 18:13

Or those sweet/ bubble gum dispensers outside shops - can't imagine that now.

They have these outside a shop not too far from me! Bit of a rough looking spot, I'm surprised they haven't been tackled to the ground yet. It's the street where I find my most random plastic dogwalk street treasure, people leave sofas on the grass verges and bags of rubbish. Miraculous, really.

RabbitFurCoat · 24/01/2026 23:08

Oh and we also had this heating system of vents in the walls, we turned it on in winter and the smell of the burning dust followed by the heat was one of my favourite things... Hope someone knows what I'm on about. Oh and glass internal doors too, with a circle pattern, and glass above the doors upstairs with a little gap for ventilation. So odd!

LordBummenbachsMagnificentBalls · 24/01/2026 23:19

Stereogram pictures - my aunt had a huge one of the empire state building on her wall, it took me weeks to see it

I used to like the pale pink loo rolls.
You sometimes see patterned loo paper in m and s , but it’s rare now to see any colour but white.

The dyes used to create colored toilet paper often contained harmful chemicals that could end up in wastewater and potentially pollute water sources. As environmental awareness grew, manufacturers began to prioritize sustainable practices, leading to a reduction in the use of dyes.

Bath pearls
Scented talcum powder

Are you my MIL? 😄
She loves a patterned toilet paper, and kitchen roll!

I remember friends houses having brass knick knacks (what are they called?)
by their bare brick fireplaces.

Horse brasses? My mum got in to collecting them.

We also had something similar to aertex in the hallway.

Polystyrene ceiling tiles, that if there was a fire melted.

Answering machines. An actual machine, usually with a micro cassette for the recording.
