Does this look like a spider bite? Can you even get spider bites in the UK?!

Two little insect bite lumps, very close together on my forearm. They don’t look like much (I sometimes get spectacular reactions to mozzie bites) but they are SO itchy! DS2 is adamant that it’s one spider bite rather than two insect bites, but wouldn’t that be pretty unlikely in the UK? Settle a petty family dispute!

Quite likely in UK.

Seeline · 22/01/2026 22:22

You can get bitten by UK spiders, but I think the gap between the two sites on your arm are a bit far apart for our little ones. Hard to tell from the photo, but I think 2 separate bites are more likely.

DameOfThrones · 22/01/2026 22:26

Yes you can get bitten even by common house spiders in the UK.

I must admit I've never heard anyone say they've been itchy though.

I’ve had spider bites both in the UK and in northern France. They looked nothing like yours. There was no visible hole (at first!), nor much itchiness. Just a very tingly red spot that looked a bit like a blood blister. Within 12-24h they turned into 0.5-1.5 cm clear blisters. No itchiness at all, and only one caused any significant swelling, which subsided within a few days. But the blisters took weeks to heal as the bite sites sloughed fluid and tissue. Quite gross, really. No idea why it did not occur to me to document it for Sporner Corner, would have been a blockbuster.

If they’re itchy, take antihistamines.

echt · 22/01/2026 22:42

Just to join the chorus that you can be bitten by spiders in the UK. And they're venomous too,

Boogiemam · 22/01/2026 22:58

That would have to be a pretty big spider for one singular bite, far too big for any UK spiders I would imagine. DH often gets bug bites close together like this. An antihistamine should sort the itching and a bug bite stick is the best, stinga like a bitch but takes the itch away

My husband got bitten by a false widow a few years ago, it was awful. His hand just ballooned and was itchy and full of pus.

Wishitsnows · 22/01/2026 23:18

My DD got bitten by a UK spider and it ended up with sepsis and a stay for a week in hospital!

smallglassbottle · 23/01/2026 00:36

It looks like a house spider bite. Their fangs splay out when they bite, so each puncture mark is further apart than people realise. Both dh and ds have been bitten by a house spider where we are. They both needed antibiotics and dh has been left with some minor nerve damage in his lower leg. The site still tingles and hurts from time to time.

Tiptopflipflop · 23/01/2026 00:42

I had a spider bite in the UK. Barely noticed it initially. Turned into a nasty case of cellulitis and required lots of IV antibiotics
Still have the little dents 20 years later.

DilemmaDelilah · 24/01/2026 13:36

You can, and it does. I always come up in a big itchy weal which lasts for weeks, but I have not had any other problems.

VulnerableSleeve · 24/01/2026 14:08

I’ve had two spider bites that look like that, two puncture marks just as your pic. It’s not as unusual as people think. Both times felt stingy and then itchy as they healed

TalulahJP · 24/01/2026 14:40

do flea bites not look like that, two holes?

Barrellturn · 24/01/2026 14:41

Basilisk

Fleas are one hole per bite. I don’t think it’s fleas, my cats are treated regularly and nobody else is getting bites. It’s a weird time of year for the usual biting fuckers, though!

It could be. I have had spider bites here and they normally make two punctures

Mikabli · 24/01/2026 19:59

Ghs bite. Giant house spider. They usually dont bute but can. Ive been bitten by a big one in my hoodie sleeve and it looked exactly like that.
