‘Funeral’ flags on cars?

I’ve never seen it before, so wondered if it’s a thing now.
I was inadvertently caught up in a funeral cortège (I entered it on a roundabout) and had noticed a flag on one of the cars, but didn’t see straight away what it said (Funeral in white letters in a black background).
If this is a common thing, what’s the etiquette please?
I wondered if I’d done the wrong thing by ending up in the middle of it, so chose to turn off and go a different way.

The etiquette is that you should have let the cortege through before you entered the roundabout.

You did the right thing to turn off once you realised you were in the middle

They are becoming more common. I live near a cemetery and see a few. And the etiqutte is basically don't split the cars and if you accidently do, then do what you did.

I haven't seen this but a wonderful HGV driver held up the traffic to our right (when he would've had right of way ) for my Dad's funeral; procession.

Haven’t seen flags, although a massive local funeral recently had ribbons on their cars and were gratifyingly given right of way over a roundabout so they could stick together.

My own dad’s funeral had many drivers stop to let us past. One chap at a bus stop raised his cap.

It means so much to the bereaved that these little things still happen on a final journey.

They are common in America. The final car in the cortège normally has two flags, so it’s clear when to pull into traffic.

I think it’s a good idea.

I haven’t seen them for year. I live near a crem and it’s a nightmare trying to work out which cars are part of the cortege.
