Any travel experts - booking flight legs separately

Hi. Writing this down it sounds ridiculous, but can anyone tell me if there are problems caused by booking an outward flight (long haul) with one carrier, and a return flight with another? It seems much cheaper this way - according to Skyscanner - but I'm worried I'm missing something! For info, outwards would be with Oman Air (reviews okay), return to UK with Austrian Airlines.

Booking different legs of the same journey with another airline can be an issue in case there are delays, but if you're going the entire way with the same carrier, surely that's okay?

Thanks!

I booked my flight London to Melbourne using a good old fashioned travel agent!
Saved me so much money because they have access to more information than the internet.
ie paying extra for leg room v premium economy saved me £1300 ! I was able to choose my seats for all 4 flights without paying extra for booking in advance.

It's fine as long as the outbound flight isn't cancelled and then you either can't use the return or need to book a new flight. Not very likely to happen unless you're planning something like a BA flight to Tel Aviv and an EL AL flight home!

The only problem I can foresee is that say the outbound leg is rescheduled for 3 days later and you want to extend the trip by 3 days at the other end you’d have to pay to change the other leg. If you were booked out and back with the same airline they may (but not a guarantee) move the return leg for you free of charge.

Thanks for your replies. I hadn't thought of the outbound being cancelled, that is a good point CheeseWisely and Mumsntfan1.

Maybe I should try a travel agent Gotitgotit - must admit I hadn't thought of that either! Haven't used a travel agent for many years.

The price difference is about £500 which would make quite a difference to our trip.

Yes honestly I genuinely thought going into travel agents was going to be a waste of time TBH . A friend recommended I did and it really was worth the hour of speaking to a human being rather than the faff of the internet!
Have just remembered I then did the same for a cheap getaway to Rhodes and again saved a fortune and had a really lovely break.
