Sauna etiquette

There's a sauna at my gym which I enjoy after a workout. Usually frequented by women like me in a towel or swim wear quietly relaxing. In the last couple of weeks it's been full of (mostly teenage) girls often in full gear wear. Today there were two with socks and trainers on 😮 Often on phones, taking selfies, playing music, chatting / swearing loudly.
I presume it's the January gym joiners and will hopefully settle down but do people not know to get undressed to use a sauna?
I know the Scandinavians think we're crazy for wearing swimwear but going in fully clothed, on phones! WTF??

Seems weird they aren’t at school. I’d complain to the management.

Could be after school.

@LakeFlyPie Aren't there rules for how you use the sauna and if those aren't being adhered to you just let management know?

Placetobreathe · 20/01/2026 21:37

I've never ever heard of people using a sauna fully clothed.
There was a thread on MN recently about an OP being upset about being asked to leave a sauna in Germany or similar because she was wearing a swimsuit and the rule was naked. And I thought that's what the debate usually was: swimwear or naked.

I'd certainly be complaining to the gym management about this behaviour, Particularly the mobile phones. Totally disrespectful of other sauna users.

SirChenjins · 20/01/2026 21:39

Our gym doesn't allow mobile phones in the sauna for obvious reasons - between that, the noise and the swearing I'd be complaining to the gym manager.

renthead · 20/01/2026 21:47

I’d raise this with staff. These are all very weird breaches of sauna etiquette!

True.
Goodness knows why anyone would sit in there fully clothed with shoes on. You’d be so hot!
And dirty shoes no doubt. So rude with the phones too.

Princesspollyyy · 20/01/2026 22:14

There will be a rule against taking phones in there, and taking photos is a definite no.

Juat report them to the management.

Agree. The phone thing makes me worried about dodgy photos too.

You're all right, I will speak to the gym manager although I'm not sure what they can do other than put a sign up saying no photos in sauna and maybe a swim wear and towels only sign outside the sauna. There's already a sign in the changing room asking people to be respectful of privacy when taking selfies. I find the whole gym selfie obsession completely weird and narcissistic. Do people really think anyone wants to see them posing and pouring in the gym changing room mirror?! Don't get me started on the vaping in the changing rooms 😡

Ugh. Your gym sounds dog rough. Find a new one! Phones are banned in our spa area, kindles allowed in the relaxation room. Vaping and selfies? Fuck that

LakeFlyPie · 21/01/2026 20:42

😂 it's a JD gym so cheap and usually cheerful. It has good equipment and classes and is usually ok but seems to have suddenly become overrun by trampy 17 year olds!

'respectful' when taking photos in a changing room?! There should be absolutely no photos allowed in places where people are undressing. And definitely not in the sauna.

fashionqueen0123 · 21/01/2026 21:21

What on earth. This sounds like a right rough gym! 🙈

Maryberrysbouffant · 22/01/2026 09:45

Definitely report to staff (preferably whilst they’re actually in there so it can be dealt with quickly) they wouldn’t get away with that at our gym.

The gym can withdraw membership from the worst offenders, though I doubt they ever would.

Redhairandhottubs · 26/01/2026 07:54

The JD gym where I live is full of teens and early 20’s. It’s very much a young persons gym! Sauna fully clothed is for weight loss I imagine 🙄 I would look for another gym tbh.
