Do I smell of wee?

Helpmechooseausername · 20/01/2026 20:55

Ok, so I can't bring myself to ask anyone IRL!

I use tena pads every day. Normal ones on a normal day, extra plus ones on a bad day. I usually go through 2 pads a day.

I have no sense of smell.

Do I smell of wee?! No one has ever mentioned it, but then who would?!

They claim to absorb the smell of wee, but do they really?

Thanks x

You dont need to live like this. Go see a womens health physio. They will advise a course of exercises and correctly diagnose you. It was life changing for me.

Anyahyacinth · 20/01/2026 22:47

Oestrogen cream helped me too …but I think I have days when I used the cream when my bladder is more irritated (by the cream). Stronger control on other days. I worry about odour too

Hi OP, feel for you. Go see your GP. It's more common than you think. Could even be that you're not doing the exercises correctly. Ask a physio if they think kegels would help but don't buy any without seeing your GP or physio for recommendations first-they're an expensive buy if you don't need them.

Meantime look at the Vagisil range which include intimate wipes just to reassure you during the day. I think most times you can get the help you need with this. Good luck.

Kegels are free, and easy to do. You can do them sitting at the traffic lights or waiting in a queue.

The things you buy are (I think) weighted pessaries, or something?

Learning to do Kegels can't hurt, and might help.

Ask to see a urogynae. There are potentially surgery options like a bladder lift. I think you would like you’re beyond physio but they might make you do it first.

I've heard horror stories about bladder lifts with mesh implants and the need for follow-up surgery - not sure I would be recommending that.

Constipation can be solved by having two strong black coffees a day.

@Helpmechooseausername you may be able to get your continence aids on prescription. Ask for a referral to the continence nurse.

This^ Please try them if you haven't already, they were so helpful & understanding.
But don't say what my M-i-L did, "Oh WtP has been talking to the incontinent nurse" 😧

Maybe she can, but the OP started the thread to get people's opinions, presumably with a view to potentially acting on them.

I always worry about this. I use tena lady pads too and change regularly. Also carry a small pack of feminine wipes to freshen up just for peace of mind.

MsSmartShoes · 20/01/2026 23:35

As long as you change frequently and don’t leak onto your clothes you’re fine.

anonlawyer · 20/01/2026 23:57

Are you overweight op? I’ve had 4 big babies too and was leaking really badly but I have lost 3 stone and it has mostly stopped. Sorry if that’s unhelpful.

Yes absolutely don’t have mesh, but they can do it without. I’ve had multiple major prolapse surgeries on bowel and bladder etc.

it definitely improved my continence.

so worth investigating.

user746016 · 21/01/2026 07:43

I would be changing more frequently since if you are waiting until they are soaked through then yes there is a chance there is an odour as they fill up. I’d move to four a day and that should give you some reassurance and stop you worrying about it.

Owly11 · 21/01/2026 07:50

Have you tried giving up sugar? It sounds weird but since giving up sugar it seems to have improved my incontinence hugely. Also have a couple of kiwi fruit for breakfast religiously for the constipation. These two changes made way more difference for me than years and years of (properly performed) kegels and pelvic physio.

To all those people saying have surgery, medication, yet more physio etc. Why?
Pads are a good solution, convenient, effective and non-invasive.
I’m similar to OP, four kids with instrumental deliveries. Physiotherapy cannot cure it (I had 6 months and continue to do the exercises). I use pads and they are great. No one has a problem with pads for periods. Why all the dislike about pads for urine? I don’t get it.
You won’t smell from using pads OP.

Because, personally, I find leaking to be very distressing. I want the freedom of not wearing a pad every day for the rest of my life.

It's also an issue that can get worse, if you leave it untreated.

Because women shouldn’t have to accept leaking urine for the rest of their lives?

Surprised by this response. It's really better not to be leaking urine if an underlying cause and solution can be found. Pads - for any reason - are unpleasant, uncomfortable, unsexy, cost money and can cause irritation or infection. They're also disastrous for the environment.

Like a PP, oestrogen helped me: I had HRT and also used a vaginal cream. I also gave up coffee and alcohol, and lost weight. Regained control of my bladder!
Not sure if any of that helps, OP.
In any case I'm sure you don't smell.

I wear period knickers for incontinence, they're more comfortable than pads.

I've tried them and just feel wet all the time where Tenas don't.

zingally · 21/01/2026 10:37

If you're worried, perhaps you could change the pad as soon as it's noticeably wet? Assuming you can afford to? Are these sorts of continence products available on prescription? I don't know. Could be worth an ask if finances are an issue.

wishingonastar101 · 21/01/2026 11:13

Constipation will cause more issues if left untreated. Try Laxido or fibergel daily. And keep it constant. Stopping and starting with laxatives is the worst thing to do...
You are probably not drinking enough water if you are worried about leaking.

Yeah you're right! I meant the level weights that you can buy! Getting my kegels and kegel weights mixed up!
There's a good tutorial on wiki with illustrations which looks helpful BTW.
