What's for dinner?

Tonight the DCs are having chicken breasts with a mustard and honey cream sauce, with broccoli, rice and steamed carrots. Followed by tinned peaches and vanilla ice cream if I can persuade them to eat it.

I am having a halloumi and salad wrap as I am newly vegetarian.

I watched on netflix the almost-iconic series Jamies School Dinners which i had heard about but never seen. It simultaneously made me feel ALOT better about what my kids eat, but also made me feel that I need to branch out a bit and step outside my -and their- comfort zones. I know they like the chicken dish as it is one I make now and then. DS1 has food issues due to autism and this chicken dish is one of foods he will generally eat and enjoy (as long as there is just a hint of mustard). but I am stretching his tolerance a bit with the peaches and ice cream. So fingers crossed!!

We are not vegan but last night we had meatballs with lentil pasta, which was delish. I didn't mention the pasta to DH who would absolutely refuse to eat it if he heard the word lentil!! Clean plates all round Smile

Tonight we're having breaded chicken breasts (homemade) with roasted veg and potato wedges (though I'm having mine with mash)

I love it, such an easy way to increase fibre / protein! We all love it, to the point that DD10 will ask for it over 'regular' pasta.

Cauliflower cheese which I made at 6am and jacket spuds. Two sausages for ds7 as a reward for tackling the cauliflower!

Either jacket potatoes with beans and cheese or chicken fajitas... Still undecided!

Mushroom risotto using Angela Hartnett's recipe, which I'm only allowed to make every few months because of the outrageous amount of butter in it.

The omnivores will have a steak along with their risotto.

MinnieMountain · 20/01/2026 16:58

Minestrone.

TheCurious0range · 20/01/2026 16:59

Jacket potatoes, salmon , asparagus and green beans. Not exciting but it'll do for a weekday!

Pepsi4Eva · 20/01/2026 17:03

It sounds pretty exciting to me. Smile

@Pepsi4Eva I’m trying to go newly vegetarian, I tend to eat vegetarian in January and felt a lot better for it last year. How are you finding it? Tonight I am having fuesli pasta, Marscapone sauce, olives, feta, Parmesan and artichokes

Fopar · 20/01/2026 17:37

Re-heated Chinese take away.

I usually order the same thing every time, but decided to go "off-piste" and try something different. It was very, very disappointing and I am not looking forward to the leftovers.

Yes, I will be reheating the rice - I have done this for 40 years with both Indian and Chinese leftovers, and haven't succumbed to the almost certain death that this entails on MN!

Chickenwing2 · 20/01/2026 17:59

Baked Sweet potatoes (3 because they are tiny) with both cottage cheese and normal cheese.

NotDonna · 20/01/2026 18:00

We are having Tuscan chicken tonight (sun-dried tomatoes cut in teeny tiny pieces with lots of cream, garlic, peppers & chicken; I’ll throw in some spinach too. Served with pasta for DD2, DD3 and DH. DD1 & I will have either courgetti as trying to cut down on carbs.

Food & ND is blooming tricky @Pepsi4Eva my youngest (age 16) has ADHD and has never eaten well. It’s a textures thing mostly; and the ‘look’. Hardly any veg are on her menu. It’s been a slog. She’ll now eat carrots, peppers, sweetcorn, cucumber, olives, potatoes. So we have the same veg over and over. I obviously give her other veggies alongside the above but rarely eats them. She’ll now tolerate things mixed up like a one pot but for a long time nothing was allowed to touch anything else!! 🤣 Oh and onions are tricky as are chicken thighs even cut in small pieces and skinless! I do one veggie meat a week but any more I feel she’d be malnourished (if she’s not already).

Chickenwing2 · 20/01/2026 18:00

@foparI also always have the reheated takeaway rice for breakfast or lunch the next day and have never even had a dodgy tummy.

Ipsevenenabibas · 20/01/2026 18:01

Chicken red thai curry with sticky jasmine rice. Followed by mango for desert.

cocopopps75 · 20/01/2026 18:04

Lamb mince, crushed potatoes and minted peas. Gusto box this week! At least I don't have to think to hard.

gingercat02 · 20/01/2026 18:06

Sweet and sour pork with noodles or rice. Hairy bikers S&S chicken recipe, always goes down well

Imperfectpolly · 20/01/2026 18:06

I've been in the office today so its a 30 minute low touch dinner.

Oven baked Turkey meatball pasta with fresh tagliatelle. Fridge to table in 30 mins. I "make " my own pasta sauce but the turkey meatballs are shop bought.

We don't do desserts but DC will have fruit or crackers later. I'll have grapes.

ThatWasMyLastFatFreeFrush · 20/01/2026 18:08

Vegetable rice (cauliflower, carrots, peas, celery, onions) with cucumber, an apple, tuna, and then oatmeal raisin gluten free biscuits.

Pussert · 20/01/2026 18:08

Everyone's food sounds lovely and is giving me ideas for the rest of the week.
We have just had ours. Tomato soup, that on reflection I should have simmered for a bit longer and used fresh onion instead of frozen as it just didn't taste the same. I had garlic bread with mozzarella with it and ds had two cheese toasties.

GRCP · 20/01/2026 18:09

Kids have just had tuna and sweetcorn pasta. I’m feeling a bit rough so not sure about us. There are prepped enchiladas in the fridge but don’t really fancy them tonight.

ChocolateSardine · 20/01/2026 18:11

Gnocchi tray bake with bacon, halloumi, & rainbow veg. Easy as anything, and wolfed down, even by the veg sceptic.

ArcticBells · 20/01/2026 18:22

So glad I live alone and can eat baked beans every night. I don’t know how you all produce such amazing meals - what a sweat!

diggermama · 20/01/2026 18:51

Chorizo, halloumi and cauliflower bake, a keto dish. So easy and so yummy

CurlewKate · 20/01/2026 18:54

Dal and roasted vegetables. With my DD’s mil’s roti, which she has tried to teach me to make but I just can’t-so she posts me some!

Owlmoonstar · 20/01/2026 18:58

Chinese pork steaks, red cabbage and red onion slaw, broccoli and rice.

Tomorrow and Thursday will be Pork + Lentil chilli. Huge pot to last two days.

Friday shall be pizza and leftover slaw.

HedwigHedgepig · 20/01/2026 19:52

@PastaAllaNorma I was intrigued by your comment about butter so I looked up the recipe. Good heavens (but I want it!).

(Would also happily eat your username!)
