Do they notify you when there will be major works?

TIA

Not always

IHeartJeff · 20/01/2026 14:30

Pretty much never

Placetobreathe · 20/01/2026 14:38

I get really nice nice letters addressed to "Dear Railway Neighbour" notifying me of work on the line near the station near me.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 20/01/2026 14:39

Yes

Koalaslippers · 20/01/2026 14:41

Yes.

Puctureonthewallsaysitall · 20/01/2026 14:59

Yes get a nice letter telling us when, what and why they're doing it. The last two weekends they've done overnight work and we had a letter explaining why it was at night and apologising. I'd say it happens once or twice a year but it is only an hourly train service (two trains an hour, one in each direction).

bugalugs45 · 20/01/2026 15:33

My garden backs onto the railway, never had a letter in 6 years I’ve lived here and been woken up a few times in middle of night lol, luckily pretty rare though

AGreatUsername · 20/01/2026 15:34

Yes

SpookedMackerel · 20/01/2026 15:37

Always get a letter.

8TinyToeBeans · 20/01/2026 15:41

Yeah, we have a railway line at the bottom of our garden and they always send letters to 'railway neighbours' informing us of planned works.

murasaki · 20/01/2026 16:03

We're about an 8 minute walk away and always get letters. I've never heard the overnight works though, although I can hear early morning trains if I'm awake.

Needmorelego · 20/01/2026 16:04

If it's overnight works then yes we do.

Wilma55 · 20/01/2026 16:05

Usually yes

QwestSprout · 20/01/2026 16:07

Depends where you live - I used to live near one (Scotland) and we were never notified, you just worked it out when the floodlights went up at midnight and the interminable noise of whatever heavy machine it was this time kept you awake.

CrimeBoyIDontKnow · 20/01/2026 16:11

Overnight works, yes. When there's a rail replacement bus service or signalling fault, no.
We get postcards or letters and have recently signed up to a WhatsApp group but they've not actually sent a message yet.

CrimeBoyIDontKnow · 20/01/2026 16:14

I should add - why they inform us seems a bit random, as in we'll get a letter about works from date X to date Y in area A to B, which we couldn't ever hear or see; but not about area C to D which is close enough we can hear it through triple glazing.

NotDonna · 20/01/2026 16:41

Yes and they send letters. There’s been works twice in the 8 years we’ve lived here. Neither time woke us. Pretty major line into London, 3 trains an hour in each direction.
Whereas when we lived backing onto a London tube (overground section) we never received notice and the work’s noise overnight was horrendous and went on for many nights & twice in the 18 months we lived there. I think the difference is only a few houses back onto the line where we are now whereas there were literally hundreds of flats etc in London.

User122333 · 20/01/2026 16:48

Yes, another Railway Neighbour here. Always for overnight work.

RightOnTheEdge · 20/01/2026 16:53

We always do if they are doing overnight works.

MittensTheKittens · 20/01/2026 16:55

You can register for emails here: www.networkrail.co.uk/our-work/living-by-the-railway/

Zigazagbox · 20/01/2026 16:56

Only if it puts the level crossing out of operation

03cg73 · 20/01/2026 16:57

We get the ‘dear railway neighbour’ letters. But usually only if the work is going to be done overnight. They sometimes close our line on a Sunday and do works then. We don’t tend to get notified about those ones

Slightyamusedandsilly · 20/01/2026 16:59

Yes, always. By letter, 'Dear Railway Neighbour...'

HeartyBlueRobin · 20/01/2026 17:06

A railway line runs a few streets behind our home and we're informed when overnight work is taking place.

AcidicTrifle · 20/01/2026 17:29

We always got letters for overnight works, not for daytime ones. Usually well in advance but even for emergency works we’d get at least a note through the door a few hours before.
