Explain how Trump taking Greenland is different to Russia invading the Ukraine?

PurpleChick2 · 19/01/2026 12:25

Please explain this scenario as I don’t get it.

Trump wants Greenland
Putin wants Ukraine

what’s the difference?

Most of the world is against Russia invading Ukraine.

why does trump think he can have Greenland and we’ll all be ok with it?

I agree

RunningOnEmptyLegs · 19/01/2026 12:28

Trump doesn’t care what we think. No one is ok with it except a few of his batshit supporters.

I said on a recent thread that Trump has gone insane and lots of people disagreed - look at his letter to the Norwegian government. He is insane. He needs to be removed from office as a matter of desperate urgency 😢

BoxingHare · 19/01/2026 12:29

It isn't different.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 19/01/2026 12:30

It's the same principle. I think part of it is grand standing to show he's a tough guy like Putin.

Figgygal · 19/01/2026 12:31

It isn't different
No different to Hitler deciding he wanted Austria or Poland either
It's disgraceful

Malariahilaria · 19/01/2026 12:32

I agree. He's rapidly descending towards being as much of a dictator as Putin and Kim. I don't believe he's actually making these decisions though. Some shady advisors and billionaire lobbyists have their own agendas. Trump just loves being the bully boy.

I've seen a few things recently from various people saying he's showing signs of fronto-temporal dementia.

That letter is just bonkers. He absolutely is insane.

Abra1t · 19/01/2026 12:33

Trump will pay Greenlanders. Which of course makes it absolutely fine and why are they complaining?! Don’t they know a good deal and better than the Chinese or Russians?! They should be grateful.

Think this is the difference.

PurpleChick2 · 19/01/2026 12:33

Ok lots of people agreeing. I thought I was clearly missing something!

is there another side to this where there are sound grounds for him to take Greenland?

Well Greenland is doing a great job of keeping the Epstine files out of the news, isn't it?

The U.S. has:
• never owned Greenland
• never governed it
• never had a treaty claim to it
• never had a colonial relationship with it
The only U.S. presence is:
• Thule Air Base, which exists because Denmark and Greenland allow it.

You really thought people in Europe would agree that Trump invading Europe was a good idea? Who have you been talking to IRL OP?! What threads have you seen on this on MN? The UK is on Denmark’s side. The US are just bullies and if they get Greenland their ‘golden dome’ will make them totally unaccountable to anyone and safe from the MAD that has kept them and Russia in check for 70 years.

Greenwitchart · 19/01/2026 12:40

No difference!

MNLurker1345 · 19/01/2026 12:45

Firstly America already has significant military presence in Greenland with full Danish consent. Trump has no plans to invade Greenland. A territory that a major power already has military access to and therefore degrees of military control is not at risk of invasion.
Greenland is crucial for American security, and therefore Western security.
China and to a lesser extent was providing capital to Greenland for infrastructure investment there gains some leverage.
Trump speaks in loud, noisy rhetoric, to send messages out to the world, China especially.

Not at all. I think you have misread my post.

Well, because he really, really wants it. And it's not fair Denmark has it as Trump wants it. And Norway (which is apparently just another name for Denmark, rather than an entirely different nation) were super mean to him by not giving him an award he definitely deserved as he definitely definitely ended soooo many wars, more wars than anyone else has ever ended, ever. He's the most peaceful person of all time, don't you know. Waaaay more peaceful than Obama, who he's definitely not super jealous of. So it's only right that he gets to invade any country that takes his fancy. Welcome to the great Trump utopia - it's a golden age, apparently.

Meadowfinch · 19/01/2026 12:54

It isn't.

Trump is a disgrace to the American people.

Eviebeans · 19/01/2026 12:57

There is no difference- both are completely wrong
Trump doesn’t care less what anyone thinks-if he wants something and it isn’t given to him he will just take it- in that way he is very similar to Putin

GeneralPeter · 19/01/2026 13:17

Decision to invade:

  • Both equally illegitimate (though rationales differ slightly).
  • Trump invading would all but wreck the Nato/Western alliance, which Russia’s invasion didn’t. [edited to add]

Manner of invasion/occupation:

  • Putin’s war has been brutal. That makes it morally much worse than a bloodless capture (which is presumably what Trump would do).

Situation post-facto:

  • From a Western perspective, US owing Greenland is good (ie splitting that question out from the two above), probably better than Denmark owning it. Russia owning Ukraine is bad.

I don’t think Trump gives a toot about the Epstein files. He’s been accused of god knows what in the past and it doesn’t stick,

Lindy2 · 19/01/2026 13:58

It isn't different. Both are unacceptable acts of aggression.

Do you genuinely believe he won’t invade? I think you’re deluded I’m afraid - he absolutely will. This has nothing to do with security and everything to do with money.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 19/01/2026 14:37

It's not different

MargoLivebetter · 19/01/2026 14:40

Very little difference, except the US has even less claim to Greenland than Russia has to some bits of Ukraine.
