Why are there Mumsnet 'Rebels'?

febgate16 · 19/01/2026 00:36

Why are there so many 'rebels' on MumsNet who claim that - despite being British - they do not like or admire the Royal Family. Are they trying to be edgy or something when the RF are a well-established British institution that exist precisely because the British support and love them?

I meant in the sense a lot of Mumsnetters come across as very well-educated and clever, but distinctly middle-class as opposed to upper-class or working-class. And in a typical middle-class fashion seem to be rebelling against the monarchy as it's part of the British establishment. The way they criticise the monarchy or make a point of expressing their indifference to it is just very specific and comes across as sneering rather than resentful or angry (like a working-class hater of elitism and privilege might be).

Edited

A lot of the people on here are fairly newly into the middle class, I think. and probably dont have families who are true blue monarchy worshippers. The ' middle class' is much more diverse now in terms of background. It used to be fairly homogenous and flag waving but it's more complex than that now....with much more influence from US as well.

It’s 2026, having an unelected head of state is absolutely ridiculous but most British people seem to want to keep them so it’s not a hill I want to die on.

tellmewhynot · 19/01/2026 02:26

I believe it’s reasonable not to admire people solely based on family lineage or inherited privilege. This doesn’t make someone a rebel; it simply means they don’t accept an outdated system where certain individuals have privilege just because they were born into the RF.

I used to deface Queenie on the banknotes (vampire teeth, Frankenstein bolts, 'twat' across the forehead etc) but it's more difficult now they're polymer. So now I instigate armed revolt instead.

Tell me: who do you look to in times of crises for leadership and comfort? Weren't you comforted during COVID by The Queen's speech; would you no have been comforted during wars like WW2 or the Falklands War by royal speeches of reassurance?

Anyone else reading this with the mental soundtrack of Holst's Jupiter, or is it just me?

Absolutely not. I was too busy working to watch a privileged old lady give a speech. Why would what she said mean anything to me?

vodkaredbullgirl · 19/01/2026 03:13

Too busy working to notice.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/01/2026 03:42

The Post Office's decision to introduce self-adhesive stamps is clearly a reflection of the rebellious nature of the Great British Public as one no longer has to lick the back of the Monarch's head.

zebrazoop · 19/01/2026 03:55

Because the RF are nonce sympathisers . Not for me.

I think that the only remotely useful thing they do is this: they are ridiculously rich and privileged and absolutely everything and can do anything they want yet the still regularly fuck up big time. That makes me think that literally everyone fucks up and that makes me feel better. Years and years and years ago I wanted to leave a bastard and thought I couldn’t. Then Charlie and Di split and I thought, if they can, I can. But generally speaking, they are useless. I did get quite excited when I saw odious Andrew was moving to Marsh Farm but it turned out to be a beautiful farm and not the estate in Luton, which would have been better for him.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

it’s like a really posh series of Jeremy Kyle with all the drama they have.

Also agree Marsh Farm in Luton would have been far more entertaining

MayaPinion · 19/01/2026 04:36

Is this for real? Of course we’re not rebelling against the monarchy! What’s there to rebel against? They’re just overpaid celebrities- kind of posh Kardashians, if you will. All the pomp and golden carriages stuff is a bit silly, and they clearly live in some sort of fancy soap opera, but the plebs and forelock tuggers seem to love it. It’s all bread and circuses, innit?

CountFucula · 19/01/2026 04:55

This post has come at an opportune moment for me. I’m gathering together a few peeps to overthrow/blow up the monarchy. It’ll take a few months to plot, I’m thinking we will be ready early November time.
Any interested parties: meet ups are weekly at The Duck and Drake Inn by The Strand.

cariadlet · 19/01/2026 05:06

I've been a republican since childhood. It's nothing to do with trying to be a rebel. I've just always thought that it was outdated, unfair and faintly ridiculous that anyone should have excessive wealth and privilege or be accorded respect simply due to an accident of birth.

LighthouseLED · 19/01/2026 05:31

I think the whole concept of royalty is ridiculous. When I think about it at all. Which is only when threads like this pop up on my MN feed.

i also can’t believe there’s anyone who actually takes Quora seriously

Haven't your numerous other threads on the topic answered this question yet?

What a weird obsession.

Kitterkitkat · 19/01/2026 05:44

Majority of us just take a vague interest in what they're up to. I have a mild apathy towards it as it seems impossible to change the current hierarchy. I certainly don't think they're 'superior'.

Tell us what you admire about somebody who paid for her son to avoid sex offence charges?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 19/01/2026 05:54

If we ever do get rid of these parasites, no doubt it will involve massive pensions paid for by public funds, permitted to retain ownership of the properties, etc etc

The Bolsheviks had the right idea.

silverringpoles · 19/01/2026 06:08

I have a shrine to the late Queen in each room of my house. I also have one in the car and carry a portable one in my bag - you never know when you’ll need to draw on her leadership.

  1. I look to my family
  2. No. Some old woman with bags of money offering normal folk reassurance was not comforting to me.
  3. Again, no. They’re the most protected people in this country, why would I be comforted by them? I’d be more comforted by old Margaret down the road standing up and doing a speech 😂😂😂
TikTokker · 19/01/2026 06:55

I don’t know what the rest of these fuckers are up to but I’m baking a cake with Queenie’s face on today to share with my neighbours, just to remind them of her. It’ll be in the image of her at her coronation.

Are you Scottish btw? The would you no be comforted sounded Scottish in my head. Thought you were from Espana…

Offmybloodybulbs · 19/01/2026 07:00

The whole aristocracy and the unearned wealth and privilege is mad. What on earth fits them for leadership?

There was something comforting about the continuity of the late queen - she just reigned for so long and gave us a kind of constant national identity that reached back all the way to the second world war.

I can't see the point of this lot, inherited titles or the house of Lords. But I largely give them no thought and they have no affect on my life ( other than the fact they have unfair ownership of most of the land in the UK which is maddening).

If I do think about it I get a bit stuck on how we'd replace them. As given the chaos of parliament you do need a stable national figurehead and second chamber. So we'd have to decide those.

GingerPubes · 19/01/2026 07:05

Are you an American?

The Brits have a long history of dissent. It's that which makes them British. Their view of monarchy is one of quiet tolerance at best. They did chop the head off of one of them afterall...before the French made it cool.
