Why are there Mumsnet 'Rebels'?

febgate16 · 19/01/2026 00:36

Why are there so many 'rebels' on MumsNet who claim that - despite being British - they do not like or admire the Royal Family. Are they trying to be edgy or something when the RF are a well-established British institution that exist precisely because the British support and love them?

Yeh, that'll be it

Tell us some things you like and admire about them.

blacksax · 19/01/2026 00:40

You again.

This time exhibiting your complete and utter lack of understanding of what makes a country a monarchy instead of a republic.

It’s a niche interest. Most of the country couldn’t give a crap about them despite what the media like to portray. Eg. “The whole country is in mourning” when one of them dies. It’s bollox.

QueenMummyTheFirst · 19/01/2026 00:47

Hahahahaha 😅
I'm not sure I've ever been described as a rebel before! They don't revoke your passport you know, if you don't wave the Union Jack on the King's birthday.

I think they're a waste of money, and represent the very worst of our country in terms of inequality, inherited privilege, and the benefits gained for the elite few through their ancestral violence and oppression of others.

They exist precisely because they have power and money. Not because we all love them, but because their forebears stole it.

Tell me: who do you look to in times of crises for leadership and comfort? Weren't you comforted during COVID by The Queen's speech; would you no have been comforted during wars like WW2 or the Falklands War by royal speeches of reassurance?

Honestly, why would I care what they think or do? They do nothing for me, and have no idea what real life is like, how can they possibly comfort or reassure us?

Oh that has given me a laugh! I have no idea what you think you are doing but it’s highly amusing!

Too quick OP. Should have led up to this gradually.

That Queen is dead.

Tell us what you like and admire about Queen Camilla? How does she lead, reassure and comfort you?

febgate16 · 19/01/2026 01:00

Also, the British users on Quora are almost entirely very pro-monarchy even though most of them are left-wing there.

So, Mumsnet seems odd to me.

I think that the only remotely useful thing they do is this: they are ridiculously rich and privileged and absolutely everything and can do anything they want yet the still regularly fuck up big time. That makes me think that literally everyone fucks up and that makes me feel better. Years and years and years ago I wanted to leave a bastard and thought I couldn’t. Then Charlie and Di split and I thought, if they can, I can. But generally speaking, they are useless. I did get quite excited when I saw odious Andrew was moving to Marsh Farm but it turned out to be a beautiful farm and not the estate in Luton, which would have been better for him.

I have to be honest, I didn't actually know she did a speech for covid, but then, I am completely ambivalent about the Royal family. They don't really appear on my radar unless they happen to be all over the news for some reason (randy Andy / Epstein etc). Even then, I don't absorb more than the headlines.

The concept of looking to someone else in times of crisis for comfort is a new one on me too.

Timetoheal4good · 19/01/2026 01:05

I am absolutely howling at this lol

EBearhug · 19/01/2026 01:08

I think many of those you describe as rebels are not in fact planning to blow up Buckingham Palace or anything, so in fact not rebels at all.

It's fine to say you don't support the monarchy - there are plenty of reasons not to. No one is going to be hanged for treason because of saying so. It's just part of free speech, being allowed to express your opinion.

MN is a large site, which includes people who aren't British. Different people have different opinions.

Don't remember the Queen making a speech during covid, but I'm willing to bet it would have been more comforting than anything Boris came out with. Fortunately, my memory has cleared his utterances too.

I meant in the sense a lot of Mumsnetters come across as very well-educated and clever, but distinctly middle-class as opposed to upper-class or working-class. And in a typical middle-class fashion seem to be rebelling against the monarchy as it's part of the British establishment. The way they criticise the monarchy or make a point of expressing their indifference to it is just very specific and comes across as sneering rather than resentful or angry (like a working-class hater of elitism and privilege might be).

Didn't know the Queen made a speech during lockdown. And I quite like the royal family. Though I appreciate that is a fairly irrational liking.

EBearhug · 19/01/2026 01:22

I suspect there are far more posters who never mention the RF than those who do.

British here. Royal Family are an expensive waste of space who still engage in hunting. YUCK. Weirdly the only one I like a little is Harry, because he buggered off. Far better than that patronising Kate, prattling on about healing power of outdoors etc when most people are just trying to keep their heads above water. The RF are tone deaf.

Am a rebel - I like that, lol.

FrazzledHippy · 19/01/2026 01:26

Colonisation and slavery were well established too, doesn't mean they were a good fucking idea 🤷‍♀️

seaelephant · 19/01/2026 01:29

I've never met anyone who supports the royals, and I don't care to

I’m very solidly working class.

I don’t want an unelected royal family, thanks.

Wasn’t comforted by the queens speech during Covid, nor am I comforted or was I comforted by royal reassurance during wars.

No but I do remember being particularly annoyed very early on in covid when I was really unwell with breathing issues and zero medical support that things would be very different if I were royal and we live in a two tier country.
Same goes for cancer treatment, despite having BUPA we can’t hope that my husband will get anywhere near the same level of care as Charles and Katherine.

BeanQuisine · 19/01/2026 02:04

I don't like or admire the so-called "royal family" because I regard monarchism as a primitive relic of the pre-democratic age, which should have been ditched long ago.

The notion that this or that family should have special hereditary powers and privileges is the kind of laughable nonsense we associate with the most backward tribal cultures, yet we're still expected to respect this crap in a supposedly 21st century Western nation.

The monarchy and the "royals" are not just an insulting waste of time and money, the whole charade is now excruciatingly cringeworthy. Any Briton not embarrassed by it all must be impossible to embarrass.

Funnywonder · 19/01/2026 02:08

There are different views on here about the Royal Family. After the Queen died there were arguments aplenty about whether the royals were outdated and that maybe now was the perfect time to do away with the whole monarchy. If everyone was a ‘rebel’ there wouldn’t be any need for a debate. I’m in NI and don’t give a stuff about a bunch of privileged twats who are only there by an accident of birth. They are irrelevant to me.
