Random question about the Harry Potter series

This is what I woke up in the middle of the night wondering.... (strange I know).

If Professor McGonagall is an animagus and can turn into a cat - can she communicate with other cats like Crookshanks and Mrs Norris when she is in cat form, and if so what do you think they talk about?

I love this question!

No, I think she retains human sensibilities when she's a cat. She remains her human self who looks like a cat - effectively she puts on the ultimate costume. So she can't talk to Crookshanks et al.

The real question then becomes "BUT CAN SHE TALK TO DUMBLEDORE????"Smile

Thems my two cents' worth on this important philosophical debate.

Crookshanks was communicating with Padfoot. So logically it should be possible.

However PM is a professional and probably steered away from pupils pet cats (maybe allowing them to tell her things if necessary... like their pupil getting bullied).

Mrs Norris is a snitch and below her dignity.

IHateYourFace · 18/01/2026 07:43

I think she can communicate with other cats if she wants but whether she would feel the need to is another question. Sirius Black who probably felt more comfortable in his dog form was able to communicate that he was after wormtail to Crookshanks which is why the cat kept going for him. However I think it would depend on the intelligence of the animal in question 🤣

No, I think she’s still a human who just looks like a cat. Other cats would know that, like Crookshanks knew Scabbers wasn’t really a rat.

Pepsi4Eva · 18/01/2026 07:52

Interesting..... lots to ponder.

I'm taking all views on board.

(Mrs Norris has beautiful eyes though).

She can, but does he understand?

FudgeFridays · 18/01/2026 09:23

Oh @Aprecium now you've done my head in.

Pepsi4Eva · 18/01/2026 09:58

Hmmm. Dumbledore can talk to the Merfolk. I like to think he can talk to cats.

The bigger question is if the cats would allow it. Or if like my cat they'd huff.... roll their eyes....lick their own arses then give him the 'fuck you flick' of their tails as they stalk away in disgust.

This touches on my big beef with the HP books and especially films - where are the cats? All the kids are told they can take a cat, owl or summat else to Hogwarts - the place should be swarming with cats! I've always thought the movies would benefit from a cat or two in every shot.

I suspect JKR of being a dog person...

Pepsi4Eva · 18/01/2026 10:13

In my fantasy HP life I most certainly had a cat.

I did feel for poor old Scabbers though being so dismissed as being boring by the Weasleys though. I know there ended up being a reason for disliking Scabbers in other ways but it did seem unfair on a poor old rat.

Incidentally, we watched Alien for the first time last night.

That film definitely needed the cat.

100%.

We are currently well-catted. Planning to move to Australia in 2028 so not wanting to take on any more cats animals right now (Our current cats are 18 and 23) but DS1 and I were talking about how Jonesy is the best name ever for a cat. Previously DS1 has insisted his next cat be called Russell.

Theyre crawling through narrow passageways, exploring the grounds and lounging in dormatories, avoiding the chaotic loud corridors!
