I have been given antiviral to take 5 times a day. How often should I take it? Every 3 hours or Every 4 hours. All the directions say is space it out evenly

24/5 =4.8 so every 4 hours and 48 minutes.

TheMousePipes · 17/01/2026 21:32

Every 5 hours. Sorry you're suffering, shingles is bollocks. The antiviral may well make you feel unwell (nausea and dizziness) but keep taking them. Sending speedy recovery (I had shingles in my eye - it sucked and you have my sympathy).

Very1 · 17/01/2026 21:34

Every 4 hours so say 7am, 11am, 3pm, 7pm, 11pm

NHS Guidance for Aciclovir here

Hope you feel better soon!

How did you know shingles was in your eye? Was your eyesight affected. My eye was swollen but shingles wasn't in my eye

Shingles is awful. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

TheMousePipes · 20/01/2026 21:36

Shingles arrived as part of a truckload of health crisis that landed me in hospital for a week. One of the consultants put my huge behind eye headache and the rash spreading across my nose and up my forehead together, decided to have a look and confirmed it was on the optic nerve. I can't remember how it was confirmed - I was all over the shop at the time!

TheBirdintheCave · 20/01/2026 21:54

I took it when I remembered, roughly every three hours. Hope it’s not too bad for you :)

Oh dear sounds awful. I dont think I am as bad as that my problem is that whenever I have a health issue I find people with the sane health issue who are worse and worry that I will end up like them. I had sciatica three years ago and someone I know had sciatica and her whole leg went numb and my physio told me not to worry and look at others and end up like them

Make sure you're taking consistent pain relief (I was given cocodomol), get some box sets on and fluids in easy reach. Settle in and rest rest rest.

When i first suspected i had shingles i saw more than one Gp and they all said it was not shingles abd I asked if I could hac cocodamol which I have had before for sciatica and they all said no. I dont take cocodamol anymore for sciatica because i don't get sciatica pain anymore. The last time I had a very bad sciatica flare up was 3 years ago
