What do I need for a Harry Potter understairs cupboard?

Apart from the cupboard. Our house has a big understairs cupboard. I’ve always had it earmarked for when the children got into Harry Potter and DS is now obliging me 😁 What would you put in it? I was thinking of a mural of a window looking out to Hogwarts, some sparkly lights, a fluffy toy Hedwig flying overhead. I want to make my DC’s dreams come true (not my own of course, it’s purely for the DCs, I wont use it when they’re out, honest).

Don’t ask for a photo, it’s currently where I shove all the junk Confused

Mattress or beanbag! Don’t pretend that they are going to go to hogwarts unless they know it’s not real….i pranked dd ‘I’ve just had an owl’ and she believed me! she was soooo disappointed.

Ah no, I wouldn’t do that. DS is ASD and very literal. I’ve made a similar mistake in the past!

Oh you are the mum I want to be in a few years! Can you get a little fold out bed, you can get the giant beanbag ones from Argos that are good, make it up with HP bedding! Maybe a little shelf full of books and some edible frogs and snitches.

Ooh I like the idea of frogs and snitches.

They sell hanging battery candles on Amazon etc - you need those so it’ll feel like the floating candles from the great hall! Also on Etsy some creators make Hogwarts letters, again to hang from the ceiling (or a howler!). Harry Potter posters + treats from the online store, a few little pegs to hang up a Harry Potter scarf / robe / hat? They also do wands so a little shelf for him to pop his wand on.

@TheJadeDeer same here re both dc autistic - and yes, I should’ve known better! I momentarily thought it would be cute…I always wished magic was real, of course now I’d like the cleaning charms!

Sorry to say, but you need spiders. There were loads in his cupboard

As long as Aragog doesn’t move in. It currently has plenty of resident spiders…

I love these ideas. I could have an ‘appearing’ shelf for new things to appear, like edible frogs or treats. Definitely need some floating candles.

I saw an understairs cupboard that was done out with Harry Potter wallpaper - might work for yours!

Screamingabdabz · 17/01/2026 19:54

Nothing to add but just wanted to say this brought a little tear to my eye 🥲 Such a lovely magical idea. Your DC is so lucky.

I would love to say it’s not just because I’ve never grown up… but thank you ❤️

glow in the dark stars (like the ones in the ceiling in the great hall)?

put an ipad or old phone in there and play one of the asmr hogwarts vids on

youtube - even better if you can somehow make it look like the window!
Explore - MinaLima - this shop has some amazing HP stuff that's a bit different to the usual merch you can get everywhere - I think they were involved in making some of the props for the films

LlttledrummergirI · 17/01/2026 20:01

We have a futon under ours for visitors to sleep on when they come.

MinaLima. Oh. My. Goodness.

Also love the idea of stars on the ceiling. Glow in the dark wouldn’t glow as they wouldn’t get enough light but I’ll buy some glittery gold Christmas ones and stick them up instead.

That’s a good idea. I fully expect (hope!) they’ll want to sleep in there from time to time.
