Did you watch the soaps on TV when you were a child?

I was having a conversation with someone and I wondered if my experience was normal/typical of the times.

I was born in a he 80s and I always watched the soaps on TV in the evening right from when I was a young child probably age 6-7 and carried on until my teens.

It was a normal thing in my house to put the soaps on if an evening from 7.30pm and he allowed to sit and watch them with mum and dad.

They weren’t really suitable for children and my friend was horrified that I was allowed.

I grew up watching Coronation Street and it was mostly fabulous. Even into the early 2000s it was still brilliant, the Richard Hillman storyline being maybe the best of all time. The problem was that storyline. It was so original and captivating that Corrie has spent all its time since trying to emulate it and failing miserably.

Norman bates with a brief case
Pure class that line.

Oh yes, I forgot about Shortie. We roll out the "not in Gautemala now, Dr Ropata" line whenever the situ seems appropriate (surprisingly often, as it turns out 😁). I watched it every week day, couldn't miss an episode til I went on holiday for two weeks and there was no telly. I thought I'd be gagging to catch up when I got home but after watching the first couple of minutes I was sitting there wondering why 😁

Shortland Street was definitely underrated!!!
I was glued to all the soaps, but don’t watch any these days and when I catch the odd episode I think they are awful!

The soaps were always on in my house. Emmerdale, Corrie, eastenders. Brookside was my mums favourite. I vividly remember Barry grant setting fire to the shop and the Dixons moving in. I must only have been about 5 or 6 at the time

No they aren't suitable for children.

Nastiness and violence disguised as entertainment.

yep, home and away, neighbours, emmerdale, corrie, eastenders, and brookside omnibus on a Sunday afternoon.
I added ‘holly oaks first look’ when I was a teen, but was never allowed to watch the special late night hollyoaks.
stopped watching in my early 20s.
