When to apply for ESTA

I'm travelling to the US in May, last visited in early 2024 so I think my current one will have recently expired. I've googled and it advises to do it just before booking the trip but I didn't... I was going to leave it until a month before travelling so it's valid for longer but after goggling I'm a little panicked! Last time it came back approved within 20 minutes.

do it asap, like now! Yes often they do come back within 20 minutes, but often they don’t and that is when you need as much time as possible to try and sort it without losing the money you have already paid. There is no way I would gamble leaving it til last minute. So many horror stories out there.

Bloody hell. I'll do it today

Some people say to apply immediately in case you’re rejected and have to apply for a visa. In practice, I suspect most people leave it until a few weeks before the trip. As long as you don’t accidentally tick yes to one of the questions (and you’re truthful of course) the risk is low.

Ours have always come back within 24 hours - it seems to be taking a bit longer these days.

But for peace of mind, and only wasting a few £, why not apply now?

I have always applied the same time or even before booking a trip. It’s a small price to pay to know you have your Esta vs a holiday cost.

Ah no, I've left my laptop at work so will get it all sorted on Monday. I really hope 4 months is enough time! I'm only asking this because I randomly dreamt about turning up at the airport without an ESTA last night!

You can apply on your phone. I’d do it now..

The risk is low but not zero. I know someone whose esta was refused, they answered all questions correctly (all no) and never found out the reason. Had to apply for a visa - it was for a child so no interview needed but the whole process was really stressful and still took a couple of months. I wouldn’t risk leaving it.

You not only can do it on your phone, it’s best to. You have to upload a photo as part of the process, and there’s an official ESTA app.

Approved! Thanks all!
