Was this Trump’s plan all along?

Just hearing about troops from Denmark and other EU countries arriving in Greenland.

Was this perhaps his plan all along - he gets them all to defend Greenland without lifting a finger!!

No.

Sadcafe · 16/01/2026 11:09

Doubtful as it’s not it’s defence he’s interested in

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 16/01/2026 11:13

US has a armed presence in Greenland and there is no limitation on how much Trump can increase that presence. He wants their oil and mineral resources.

bemoresloth · 16/01/2026 11:13

They are defending Greenland against Trump, what exactly is this master plan?

persephonia · 16/01/2026 11:16

Defend from who? China has long term ambitions in the Arctic but isn't planning on launching an attack on Greenland any time soon. They have been investing in Ice Breakers etc but I don't see how Trump's moves will limit that. Russia has been up to nefarious actions for a while but again, unlikely to attack Greenland and as last week showed it was already perfectly possible to board Russian ghost ships when the will is there.
Everyone knows the real reason Denmark's friends are going to Greenland.

This whole thing is great for China.

As a side note it's interest that all the politicians who say global warming is a hoax are acting as if the geopolitical impacts will be real.

Bluecandycanes · 16/01/2026 11:22

TRUMP: "If we don't do it, Russia or China will take over Greenland, and we're not going to have Russia or China as a neighbor. Okay?"

"I would like to make a deal the easy way. But if we don't do it the easy way, we're going to do it the hard way."

It’s just another perspective on it all I’m thinking of…. He is stirring the pot’ but getting the result he wants?

Pity he forgets Russia already is his neighbour by around 2 miles!

ShetlandishMum · 16/01/2026 13:02

Getting richer is his plan.

Yes he’s right, wouldn’t it be awful if Russian territory was within, say, a few miles of US territory. Or if mainland Russia was within about 55 miles of mainland US. What would happen??

chergar · 16/01/2026 13:18

I don’t understand his reasoning on the defence situation - he has said he want to take it over for defence reasons but Greenland is Danish, Denmark are part of NATO, so if Russia/China try to invade NATO would step in, and USA is part of NATO so there’s no reason for USA to take it over - it is nothing at all to do with security, does he think we are daft?

Overtheatlantic · 16/01/2026 13:28

The idea was originally floated by Arnold Lauder, Estée Lauder cosmetics, a billionaire who has interests in Greenland. They’re old chums from NY and Palm Beach, and this is about plundering the natural resources of Greenland.

Shellythesnail2333 · 16/01/2026 13:48

Why do you think hes so interested in Greenland and Venezuela; 2 countries with masses of natural resources, coincidence?

Moonmelodies · 16/01/2026 13:55

It will be interesting to see what they find when all that ice and snow is cleared away.

Errolwasahero · 16/01/2026 20:48

He’s doing exactly what putin has told him to do…

NotTerfNorCis · 17/01/2026 19:22

Well he's threatening tariffs now unless other countries including the UK do what he wants. But given he was throwing tariffs around for no reason less than a year ago, that's not much of a lever.
