Boring question about Ring doorbells

We need to get a new Ring doorbell after a renovation. Previously we had a fairly standard one which was perfectly adequate for our needs, and this model is on Amazon at the moment for about £60, which seems like a good price. But since we last purchased there are now several fancy options described as ‘4k retinal’ and so on (Hmm), all a good bit more expensive. Are these worth the money? Do they do anything that the bog standard one doesn’t, or is it just a better quality camera? We really just need to be able to see who’s at the front door, and tell the postman which bin to chuck parcels in if we’re out.

I asked my (techie) son this recently, and he said it’s like the tv. When you watch something in Ultra HD, or HD or just standard, can you see a real difference between them and does it improve your view?
I said no, as it all looks mostly the same. You can see that the Ultra HD 4k is a little sharper round the edges but not enough to justify the extra cost for me. I can still tell the difference between the postman and the delivery man.

Depends why you need it. If it’s just for identifying people who ring the bell then cheap and cheerful. But if you need to have MI5 like definition to identify burglars or muggers lurking outside your door at 4am then the fancy one will be better.

Currently my DS (21) uses the ring doorbell to do his stand up routine when returning from a night out, his friends always wave and leave lovely messages. Everyone else ignores it and uses the knocker resulting in missed deliveries.

The reason I bought it was to catch our neighbour throwing cat poo onto our path. He has a deep layer of bark on his flowers beds that the local felines regularly use as a latrine. He seems to think it’s our cat who died over 15yrs ago. What I did discover was that he was stuffing used tissues into one of our conifer bushes, he is very odd and despite only using his car twice a week he cleans his vcar windows every morning. We didn’t need an alarm clock in the winter because he would scrape every mm of ice off every window at 6.30 (exactly) every morning. We now get a sleep in because we had new double glazing fitted and they provide much better soundproofing.

I could fill a TicTok page with his weird antics. The funniest is drying his garage door with a tea towel after it has been raining.

Thanks for the responses! Just bumping once in case anyone else has any insight.

I don’t think the more expensive ones are worth the money unless you’re using it to catch a stalker or something. If you’re using it to ID the postman vs your friend vs a stranger than the standard ones are fine! We upgraded ours last year and I think it was a waste to be honest
