Should you be told if the meat you're served is halal?

If you go to a restaurant or cafe or cafeteria at work or whatever. Would you expect to be informed that they were serving halal meat?

Yes

Hadalifeonce · 13/01/2026 13:25

Absolutely

dollyblue01 · 13/01/2026 13:26

Yes I would like to know as I actively avoid halal meat and do not eat where they show they serve it either.

Only if I asked.

CandiedPrincess · 13/01/2026 13:27

Yes, I think it should be stated.

JDM625 · 13/01/2026 13:28

I had thought that the majority of chicken in the UK was halal! Many pizzas shops in London were.

A friend is Sikh and always asks because she isn't supposed to eat meat blessed/ritualised by another religion.

Growlybear83 · 13/01/2026 13:29

I think it should be made clear, as much as for the benefit of people who want to eat halal meat as those who don’t.

Houseshmouse · 13/01/2026 13:29

They are both killed against their will. Why is normal slaughter ok for you but halal not? Neither is quick and painless, if you think it is then more fool you!

Coffeeishot · 13/01/2026 13:30

I imagine it is helpful for muslims to eat somewhere so yes i think it should be on the menu.

cramptramp · 13/01/2026 13:31

Yes, of course.

dontmalbeconme · 13/01/2026 13:33

No. I assume all meat served in the UK has been produced in line with UK laws and standards. As long as that is the case, I need no further reassurances.

skippy67 · 13/01/2026 13:33

Only if I asked. And I wouldn't.

So you’ve never gone to a restaurant chain then? Cos all the chicken they serve is halal.

Soontobe60 · 13/01/2026 13:33

If somewhere sells food that caters for a specific religion then I would expect that information to be signposted somewhere on the premises or menu. I also think anyone who eats meat from any source should be fully cognisant of how those animals have been bred, raised and slaughtered regardless of any religious practices before they complain.
I’m not vegetarian!

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 13/01/2026 13:33

yes

MunicipalDarwinism · 13/01/2026 13:34

To be honest I am not massively bothered either way. Most Halal meat in the UK is killed in the same way as non-Halal. But agree it is useful for Muslim people to know.

Purlant · 13/01/2026 13:35

I would like to see on the menu (or in the restaurant website) whether their eggs are free range, whether their meat is free range/organic, and where their fish is sourced from. Obviously halal information is useful for people who need to follow that diet.

I'm not saying if I agree with halal or not, just asking whether you should be given the information before eating it or not.

I think they display halal logo around the retaurants sometimes on the entrance or on the menu so if i dont see it i would assume its not a halal place.

Only Halal?

CloakedInGucci · 13/01/2026 13:40

90% of animals slaughtered in the UK for Halal are stunned first.
None of the animals slaughtered for Kosher are.

Animals slaughtered not under any religious rules are hardly cuddled to death after a life of luxury. I find people who eat meat who care about one specific thing (Halal slaughter) when they don’t really show much interest in the conditions the animal lived in, or the state of the abbatoir a touch hypocritical. (I’m not saying that applies to everyone, I’m sure some people on this thread only buy extremely ethically produced dead animals)

Branster · 13/01/2026 13:41

I think it should be made clear in a restaurant setting.
I would like to know so as to avoid it.
However, I suspect a lot of meat in the UK is halal meat but I don't know how you'd find out without asking. And would you get a truthful answer?
In all honesty, it never crossed my mind to ask this question in a restaurant, I just assumed it is not halal meat.
It should be banned.

NewYearNewMee · 13/01/2026 13:42

Yes, of course. So people who want to eat halal can and those who don’t can avoid. Same for Kosher!

HalfPenny28 · 13/01/2026 13:43

What difference would it make? There’s no humane way of killing an animal to eat…
