I need to buy a couple but they seem to do 2 or 3 variations from their basic range to gastro pub. Are any of their recipes particularly nice and worth buying?

I buy the mac with crispy bacon, it's nice but can be a bit stodgy.

Thanks.

I've had the one with some kind of crispy topping in it. Not my favourite, quite dry and the crispy topping was a bit gritty in texture

Charlie Bigham do a really good macaroni cheese

dairydebris · 13/01/2026 14:48

The cheapest one is the best imo. Others are too dry and salty

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 13/01/2026 14:50

They do one with marmite which I fancy trying!

Not macaroni cheese, but of the multiple types of lasagne they sell, the Best Ever one trumps the Gastropub and other versions.

yeesh · 13/01/2026 14:54

The best ever one is really nice, had a garlic breadcrumbs topping 😋

SPQRomanus · 13/01/2026 14:55

So easy to make yourself!

Charlie Bigham does good everything!

CB is getting very expensive, their latest range is £29 for two portions, I’d want CB serving me in his restaurant at those prices.

At that price I'd expect him to come round mine and cook it!
My macaroni cheese is excellent (if I do say so myself), it has fried potatoes and crispy bacon in, inspired by the Swiss style one that Betty's used to do.
I could easily serve four for a couple of quid. CB is having a laugh!

UrsulaBelle · 13/01/2026 15:17

I make my own. Cheddar cheese sauce, dash of worcester sauce, tsp of mustard, some fried pancetta from a little tub at Sainsbury's. A bit of parmesan sprinkled on top before baking. Yum! But if you just fancy some comfort food, the cheaper the better, imo. The crispy crumb toppings aren't generally very nice.

Gliblet · 13/01/2026 15:20

If you want a premade one Lidl do a pancetta topped macaroni cheese in their deluxe range that is easily on a par with M&S and much more affordable.

The marmite one is absolutely vile!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/01/2026 15:31

I just make a basic one, with plenty of mature Cheddar, a little English mustard, extra cheese and breadcrumbs on top, whack under the grill. I also do a cauli-mac, same, but cauliflower cooked al dente mixed in.

It always vanishes PDQ.

lostarc · 13/01/2026 16:46

Thanks all. I don’t have the time to make it myself on Saturday hence M&S but Charlie Bighams is a good idea also.

I love the marmite one 😁

I have no objection to the ready meal version but have to agree with pp, I think it takes less time to make than to microwave. Melt butter sir in a bit of flour, whisk in milk and mustard powder and heat then add cheese. 3 minutes. My mum taught me sauces when I was a child, I dont have a recipe, just do it automatically. Funny really, she was an inattentive parent who was preoccupied with her own life when I was growing up but she taught me sauces, basic sewing including using a machine, and types of birds. 💁

MissMoneyFairy · 13/01/2026 18:33

If you don't want to make the sauce just buy ready made cheese sauce, mix it with some mustard, add it to the macaroni and sprinkle cheese on top, put it under the grill.

The Halls macaroni cheese, which I buy from Asda, is really nice and a reasonable price.
