Teachers: What was it like when you moved up in your career?

Hi all, I'm a media studies teacher with 2 young kids. I'm currently part-covering the absent Head of English (mat leave), and I've now been offered an opportunity to join SLT at my current school in a new role.

I sort of feel surprised I've been asked as I haven't been here for long - I know I've been doing well in my role, particularly with parent comms, pastoral work, and helping out where needed with things I'm skilled in, but this would be an assistant head pastoral role (with a reduced teaching timetable).

If you moved into an assistant head role, how did you find it? Was there a long adjustment period or did you find your feet fairly quickly? I can't go back to the sort of hours I pulled in my early career as I have small kids now and also need my sleep due to a medical condition.

I don't want to lose entire weekends with my kids to mountains of work when I have a pretty decent balance at the moment. But at the same time, I do want my career to move forward. I am full time, for context, and have weekday childcare.

I've just realised I deleted the bit that said this is a very small private school.
