Morning TV or none? WDYD? Like GMB don't want news. If not TV, then what?

TerrorTour5 · 12/01/2026 08:11

Do you watch TV on a morning? What do you watch? If you dont watch TV, how do you bridge the gap from sleep to the day?

I really like GMB but I want to reduce my news consumption and even turning the negative stories off you still gave the headlines running across the bottom Are there any that are less news based? On a weekend, things like the morning chat shows with guests where its contemporary but not news is ideal.

Radio 4 upstairs, bbc news downstairs. On days I'm not at work TV goes off before the bbc begins pumping out their shows designed to make everyone think every phone call is a scam or suggest new ways to claim compensation for every minor life inconvenience.

That programme must be watched by most of mumsnet as on any thread about an unexpected phone call or wrong number the first post will be , it was probably a scam 😂

I used to love weekend children’s tv. Live and kicking etc. Big breakfast.

When you were a child?

Or, here's another bold idea, why not read a book? There's nothing better.

I’ve replied that I listen to R3 in the morning, but seeing this I feel the need to clarify not that I lie luxuriating in my bed listening, but have it on while doing all my morning things - shower, breakfast, NYT games on my iPad, chores etc, before starting work. I’m a big reader but couldn’t read while doing all that! I’ve assumed that everyone replying is also getting ready for a day of work or other commitments so is doing other things at the same time. Am I the only one? Are people really doing nothing but watching tv first thing? I

the80sweregreat · 12/01/2026 13:30

I like listening to the radio, lbc or five live.

When you were a child?

Yes, apologies from the bottom of my heart. I got quite over excited when thinking about the last time that I did watch television in the morning. I’m so sorry, I should have been clearer.

I have a little thing called a job, they're great if you want to avoid watching TV in the mornings.

I have a job, work away 50% of the month, still have time for boxsets in the morning before I shower and get ready. But then I am up between 3:30-5:00am each morning!

hiredandsqueak · 12/01/2026 13:36

@SoapyDramaI annoy most of my family who aren’t morning people but the minute my eyes open I just have to start on whatever needs doing immediately. I don’t bother with a coffee or breakfast until I have done a significant amount.

mondaytosunday · 12/01/2026 13:43

Radio 4

blackheartsgirl · 12/01/2026 13:54

No tv or radio, I like the silence. Cup of coffee, sometimes drunk outside. Then dressed and out for work.
everything’s done the night before, shower etc.

Gosh, you’re lucky if you don’t know what sleep inertia is. I can’t speak for OP obviously, but for me it means I’m very slow to get going in the morning because it feels like half of me’s still asleep until I’ve been up for a while. Is this not a thing for most people? Tbf I do have a sleep disorder and chronic fatigue and this doesn’t help.

That’s what guessed but wasn’t sure. I do know what you mean. I’ve always found it very difficult to get from asleep to awake. As a result I tend to stay asleep for the longest possible time and have been known to be out of bed and on a train within 20 minutes. TV in the morning would not help!

I don’t have a job but still can’t fit in TV in the morning. I get up shower, get dressed and then get the kids up and ready while popping on a load of washing and putting the robot hoover on.

Just remembered we watch newsround with breakfast.

SmittenApple · 12/01/2026 14:30

Personally, the thought of settling down with a box set first thing in the morning is so unappealing!

I used to listen religiously to Radio 4, but gave up when it started feeding perimenopausal anxiety. That’s now under control with HRT, but I never got the R4 habit back, and switched instead to R3 or R3 Unwind. Unwind is particularly good for gentle, relaxing music and ideal for a slow start in the morning if you struggle then.

Me too - listened to R4 religiously from the age of about 19 (now 46) but realised during Covid that the Today programme was setting up the perma-heebies for the day.

Now I listen to R3 In the morning, but do turn back to R4 around 10am for the rest of the day.

(Sidenote: I am curiously Presbyterian about having the TV on during the day - doesn't happen unless somebody is ill or it's Christmas. I have no idea why, but in my head it's Not Acceptable to have the TV on before 6pm.)

Knackeredmommy · 12/01/2026 15:54

On my wfh days I do a youtube workout. There are loads from 10mins up, then I jump in the shower, have breakfast and start work.

staringatthesun · 12/01/2026 15:59

We have Radio 4 on for about an hour while we have a cup of tea and start getting ready. It's not going to reduce your consumption of news though.

capybaraforlife · 12/01/2026 17:06

Podcast and a work out or a run with music. Don't own a connected tv!

I can definitely relate!

What's awful about that?

My whole family and now children wake up, get up, get on with day, it's perfectly normal. No need to pretend otherwise to pander to the dilly dallies who need a gap bridged, what does that even mean 😁

Do you normally have difficulty with the concept of different people doing things in different ways?

Nannyfannybanny · 13/01/2026 08:12

Unsure wether the comment about the weather being perfect for getting outside was sarcasm or not. You need light reaching the pineal gland to stop the production of melatonin as soon as possible. Of course I realise a lot of you probably get up when it's dark at this time of year, starts getting light about 8 where I am. The washing would be done early (economy 7) ready to go out if it's dry. I've always had animals, chicken, rabbits, cats, dogs. When the dks were young one of us worked nights one days. I wonder if it's why you keep seeing posts saying "my house is a mess" or "I can't seem to get anything done". Radio 4 in the car on the way to work.

Diondra · 13/01/2026 08:23

We used to do R4 but gave it up during COVID

I have my phone set up with a morning routine to auto play news headlines and weather. Only takes 10 mins.

@Knackeredmommy youtube exercise is a great idea, thank you for that.

I was being a touch sarcastic, yes. True re melatonin production, but up until these last few days it's been far too cold to be standing outside (or at least it has where I am). As you pointed out, it can also be hard to spend any time outdoors in daylight at this time of year. I think it's all part and parcel of why it can be hard to get going on winter mornings.

EnchantedDaylight · 13/01/2026 13:32

I'm happy to go outside in my PJs and crocs at anything above about zero unless it's pouring with rain, not for too long if it's freezing, but I like being cold for short spells. If I'm doing something that takes a bit longer like hanging washing out I have an oodie to pop on. Even if it's pouring I open the back door to look at the sky, it's really good for your eyes to get some daylight first thing. I have to do that part when I get to work at this time of year though.

huuskymam · 13/01/2026 13:34

If its one of the days I don't have my grand daughter, I listen to music, usually with headphones as the neighbour works nights.

Nannyfannybanny · 13/01/2026 14:57

The coldest we've had this year is -4, but I have 2 dogs,so even in the Beast from the East -12, I was outside.
