Morning TV or none? WDYD? Like GMB don't want news. If not TV, then what?

Do you watch TV on a morning? What do you watch? If you dont watch TV, how do you bridge the gap from sleep to the day?

I really like GMB but I want to reduce my news consumption and even turning the negative stories off you still gave the headlines running across the bottom Are there any that are less news based? On a weekend, things like the morning chat shows with guests where its contemporary but not news is ideal.

Radio 3! Great start to the day.

huh?

Harrriet · 12/01/2026 08:14

Local radio for us.

pinkypoo8 · 12/01/2026 08:14

Silence - it's bliss

PhantomAfternoonTea · 12/01/2026 08:16

I have a little thing called a job, they're great if you want to avoid watching TV in the mornings.

alifeonourplanet75 · 12/01/2026 08:17

I watch boxsets and go on mumsnet. I used to religiously watch the news but realised it was effecting my mental health, the constant negative stories.

Nannyfannybanny · 12/01/2026 08:17

There's no gap, curtains open. First tablet, 30 minute wait, second tablet,20 minutes wait, then tea and breakfast. Feed dogs. Day begins when I get out of bed.

Nannyfannybanny · 12/01/2026 08:18

I was just wondering if people had kids and jobs.

Yes but different life stages perhaps? My kids are older, youngest sorts herself for school so this TV time is while she is getting ready and I am having a coffee. Ive done my fair share of 20 years of chaotic mornings rushing around getting ready for school and work!

She leaves the house either with a lift from her Dad on his way to work or meeting a friend to walk. I wfh most days and dont need to log on until 10am. It means I get a morning of around 90 mins to 2.5 hours if I dont log on early or do jobs. It suits me as I suffer wuth terrible sleep inertia.

I figured scrolling made my brain take longer to wake up and I am more alert if I watch TV than scroll. After about an hour I begin pottering around tidying up and doing jobs but that first hour suits me slow.

I do like a boxset but they are evening things for me. But maybe I can find one that is more morning pace - not too heavy and comforting!¹

I think it was fairly obvious OP was talking about the time between waking up and starting work. 🙄

Radio! I listen to radio4 but that is news. Local radio's a bit dafter though, radio 2 always had a more jovial morning show and so does r5

Nannyfannybanny · 12/01/2026 08:55

Get outside, take the coffee out there. It resets the hormones to wake you up,it's good for you. Have a good look round, notice things, simple things. I love rain on spiders webs.

ItsPronouncedThroatwobblerMangrove · 12/01/2026 08:56

I used to listen religiously to Radio 4, but gave up when it started feeding perimenopausal anxiety. That’s now under control with HRT, but I never got the R4 habit back, and switched instead to R3 or R3 Unwind. Unwind is particularly good for gentle, relaxing music and ideal for a slow start in the morning if you struggle then.

Same here!

I start the day with coffee and nyt puzzles @TerrorTour5
Either in bed or outside, depending on time of year.

littleburn · 12/01/2026 09:05

Play music, listen to a podcast or audio book?

AndMilesToGo · 12/01/2026 09:17

People who watch morning TV are psychopaths.

Just get on with your morning. Go outdoors, meditate, take a walk, read a book?

cornflower123 · 12/01/2026 09:21

Youtube, only if someone I follow has posted. Alternatively silence, a podcast or BBC Sounds. So many choices really.

Belladog1 · 12/01/2026 09:26

I make my morning cuppa and pop on BBC Breakfast for the headlines. I then get ready for work and feed the dogs, and then I watch a little more while drinking a 2nd cuppa and eating breakfast. Then I'm gone.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 12/01/2026 09:28

I used to watch BBC Breakfast (when Bill and Sian used to do it, stopped when Susannah Reid took over) whilst getting ready for work. I would then listen to The Christian O'Connell Breakfast show on my drive to work. Then moved over to Capital when he left, then Roman Kemp left Capital and I now just listen to the Dave Berry Breakfast show on Absolute.

I don't have a tv in the bedroom anymore.

mylittleyumyum · 12/01/2026 10:10

I get up, shower, dress, feed cat, lay out kids packed lunch stuff and go to work.

JamesClyman · 12/01/2026 11:57

how do you bridge the gap from sleep to the day?

Coffee. Don't watch TV or listen to the radio.

ThingsgetbetterwithalittlebitofRazzmatazz · 12/01/2026 12:04

I would love it if they brought back something like the big breakfast. We actually watch children's TV in the mornings even though dc are teens - the news was causing too much anxiety and we like to have the TV on while we're getting ready.

PuppyMonkey · 12/01/2026 12:16

I like to have Channel 4 on at that time OP. All the old sitcoms are on - usually Cheers, Everybody Loves Raymond or Frasier depending on what time you switch on. Very comforting!
