Morning TV or none? WDYD? Like GMB don't want news. If not TV, then what?

Do you watch TV on a morning? What do you watch? If you dont watch TV, how do you bridge the gap from sleep to the day?

I really like GMB but I want to reduce my news consumption and even turning the negative stories off you still gave the headlines running across the bottom Are there any that are less news based? On a weekend, things like the morning chat shows with guests where its contemporary but not news is ideal.

I listen to the Today Programme on Rafio Four while I’m getting ready for work. Partly because I like to know what’s going on in the world, but also because at that time in the morning I can’t cope with anything loud and excitable which rules out stations with adverts and phone-ins.

Get outside, take the coffee out there. It resets the hormones to wake you up,it's good for you. Have a good look round, notice things, simple things. I love rain on spiders webs.

Yes, the weather’s been ideal for that lately.

RedRiverShore6 · 12/01/2026 12:39

I watch the local news and weather on BBC and the early drop of Eastenders on iPlayer

Yes but different life stages perhaps? My kids are older, youngest sorts herself for school so this TV time is while she is getting ready and I am having a coffee. Ive done my fair share of 20 years of chaotic mornings rushing around getting ready for school and work!

She leaves the house either with a lift from her Dad on his way to work or meeting a friend to walk. I wfh most days and dont need to log on until 10am. It means I get a morning of around 90 mins to 2.5 hours if I dont log on early or do jobs. It suits me as I suffer wuth terrible sleep inertia.

I figured scrolling made my brain take longer to wake up and I am more alert if I watch TV than scroll. After about an hour I begin pottering around tidying up and doing jobs but that first hour suits me slow.

I do like a boxset but they are evening things for me. But maybe I can find one that is more morning pace - not too heavy and comforting!¹

What’s sleep inertia?

Nice to have that time in the morning. If you want to avoid news what about a podcast or reading something like the New Yorker - interesting stories from around the world (but with a US flavour). In better weather it’s a nice time to get out and do a bit of light gardening.

Branster · 12/01/2026 12:43

The only time in my life I watched morning tv was when I was a student lazying about in the mornings. And some kids cartoons when the children were very young - weekend all of us in the big bed starting the day slowly at times.
I can't imagine why I would ever do it again for the rest of my life. Not even my mum watches morning tv.
Having the news on in the background is different and, of course, is not some sort of gentle bridging the gap offering.

This. I like how calm and balanced it is. I probably listen for about 40 minutes while I’m getting dressed and ready for work

Wetcappuccino · 12/01/2026 12:52

I get up 30 minutes earlier than I need to, which gives me time to feed the dog and have a nice coffee before school run/ work etc. I catch up on the news during the day but prefer to avoid it in the morning. Generally I have a 2nd tier tv series on the go for this purpose - at the moment; The Diplomat on Netflix. Old series with plenty of episodes are good too.

Gosh, you’re lucky if you don’t know what sleep inertia is. I can’t speak for OP obviously, but for me it means I’m very slow to get going in the morning because it feels like half of me’s still asleep until I’ve been up for a while. Is this not a thing for most people? Tbf I do have a sleep disorder and chronic fatigue and this doesn’t help.

EnchantedDaylight · 12/01/2026 13:00

I don't listen to or watch anything before leaving the house, I love the quietness, although I do usually have a little time on my phone before getting out of bed. I am also one for going outside, only for a minute or two in winter but always take a drink and breakfast outside when the weather permits, I really recommend that. If I'm not going to work I will potter about doing light jobs in that gap between getting up and leaving the house for the first time especially if there's no one else around.

No, I've never heard of it. I get that some people get started faster than others though. I like to hit snooze a couple of times and then have 10 mins on my phone before getting up so that is my gap I guess, I do feel slightly out of sorts if I have to get up immediately the alarm goes off.

GirlfriendofSomi · 12/01/2026 13:03

I absolutely despise TV or radio in the morning - the voices go right through me and I can't stand the information overload.

I just enjoy the silence as I start my day. I either potter around in silence just thinking about the task at hand, or I go straight out to the gym, or I have a natter with DP.

I absolutely can't stand inane background noise. I'll only have the TV on if I'm actually sitting down to watch something. I think its resistance to what I experienced growing up when the TV was on from sun-up to sun-down regardless of who was home, who was watching, what was on. Genuinely, the TV was only off when someone died 😮It was awful. Silence is golden for me.

LetMeGoogleThat · 12/01/2026 13:09

I like the familiarity of watching old US sitcoms on C4. I'm normally multitasking, drinking a coffee and checking flim flam on my phone.

hiredandsqueak · 12/01/2026 13:11

I'm one of those awful people who get out of bed and hit the ground running so don't watch tv or listen to the radio. I do put on an audiobook if I iron though. Generally I get no end of chores done between six and eight, it's probably my favourite time of the day.

Miranda65 · 12/01/2026 13:13

I have never watched TV in the morning.

OP, here's a radical idea...... maybe you could try that newfangled invention "the radio"? You'll be amazed at the variety of content on there!

Helpfullnelly · 12/01/2026 13:15

pinkypoo8 · 12/01/2026 08:14

Silence - it's bliss

Im a silence person. NO tv or radio for me. I sometimes but rarely put an easy listening playlist on the weekends x

Miranda65 · 12/01/2026 13:15

Or, here's another bold idea, why not read a book? There's nothing better.

Sleepasaurus · 12/01/2026 13:17

I wake up.
Go to the gym or walk the dogs.
Go to work.

I’m not really a tv person anyway but can’t imagine being able to sit and watch something and then get ready to work.

What's awful about that?

My whole family and now children wake up, get up, get on with day, it's perfectly normal. No need to pretend otherwise to pander to the dilly dallies who need a gap bridged, what does that even mean 😁

minipie · 12/01/2026 13:18

If you dont watch TV, how do you bridge the gap from sleep to the day?

Shower, dress, have a coffee and do NYT games. If I put the TV on or started scrolling in the morning I’d never get anything done, I need something limited. NYT games takes 5-10 min and is finished.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 12/01/2026 13:19

I wfh most days and dont need to log on until 10am.

Same here but im mystified by the apparent gap to fill before work. I have no massive gap, I just dont need to rush.

My time is filled by coffee in bed, shower & dress, sort out pets, breakfast, little jobs (recycling & bins, washing on, bird feeders, etc). Accompanied by Radio 4 in the background.

Id like to be the kind of person who goes for a walk instead of a commute.

Ive never really watched morning TV.

Zippedydodah · 12/01/2026 13:19

I have a quick coffee then I’m out with the dogs.
rarely watch tv anyway, DH will sit and watch any crap that’s on, all day and night
I wound happily not have a television, I much prefer listening to the radio or audiobooks/podcasts.

SPQRomanus · 12/01/2026 13:20

I've never watched morning TV in my life and I'm in my sixties. Never had morning TV on when my children were young either.
I either listen to radio 4 in the mornings getting ready or have nothing on at all, just hear the birds.

Andsoitbeganagain · 12/01/2026 13:20

Radio 4 upstairs, bbc news downstairs. On days I'm not at work TV goes off before the bbc begins pumping out their shows designed to make everyone think every phone call is a scam or suggest new ways to claim compensation for every minor life inconvenience.

DeQuin · 12/01/2026 13:23

Open the curtains, cup of strong coffee in bed with my own thoughts and complete silence. Bliss.

Sleepasaurus · 12/01/2026 13:23

I used to love weekend children’s tv. Live and kicking etc. Big breakfast.
