'Uncle Scrooge'

Why does Fred say Uncle Scrooge, and not Uncle Ebenezer? I think Fred's late mother was Ebenezers's sister which makes it odder.

Like calling your mums brother Uncle Smith.

In Dickens Christmas Carol for those unfamiliar.

People used to go by their family name. The eldest daughter was Miss Smith, the younger ones Miss Arabella and Miss Jane.

The eldest son Master Smith, then Master Jonathon and Master Ebenezer. So Uncle Scrooge may have been the only or eldest male relative on that side.

Because it was the Victorian protocol - based on class, relationship (not family), sex and age.

Aha, makes sense. Thank you.
