So I'm on holiday and this old guy follows me out of the breakfast room and calls after me. I think he was German and I told him I didn't speak it. So he tried Spanish and I made out the words champaign and manyana (tomorrow). And we set off seperate ways with me still processing. But I was able to call back 'sober' with my thick Scottish accent. He replied 'sober'.

I thought, I hope he knows the word and googled to see how it translated into German and Spanish. In Spanish 'Sobar' is to rub or grope.

So I may have inadvertently promised services for champagne xD
Fml xD

Seriously though why do old men have to hit on us on holiday? My table mate had a horrible old guy basically she must be a swinger because she was travelling as a solo women at an adult only resort. Hes been hanging alrond waving at us all holiday too.

Why are they always so creepy!
Just want to get a bit of sun without being fricken hounded. Now I have to worry all day about tomorrow or bumping into him around the joint.

Fs.

Least you said champagne not asti.
Aim high.

Worse still he could have interpreted 'sober' as 'super' and now thinks you're interested!! Seriously it's easy enough to not have unwanted attention from creepy men, don't make eye contact, don't engage in conversation, and if you're really not up for male attention and are only wanting a relaxing holiday with no hope of romance, wear a wedding ring, if that doesn't deter them, be grateful that you've still got it!!

rwalker · 11/01/2026 11:31

So you said sober and he repeated it back to you
to me that’s him repeating it like you do when you cannot understand someone’s response

tbh is sounds like nether of you knew what the other was on about

I'm confused - why did you say sober? You thinking he said champagne and tomorrow, and then you said sober - not yes, no, go away, or leave me alone? It just doesn't follow (but it makes a good story!)

Edited

It was just the first word that came to mind. To convey I didn't want to drink.

No would have made more sense but I was half asleep tbh lol and wasn't entirely sure he was saying what I thought he was so I thought saying I don't drink would make the most sense.

I did make the hand gesture for no too but I'm not sure if he saw.

OK but how am I not supposed to make eye contact at breakfast where there are tables everywhere around me and I'm up and down to the buffet. That's not going to happen.

If you've been to a Spanish holiday you know you can't move for old guys about the place. There's no chance you aren't making eye contact at some point. I could have kept walking tbf but I thought maybe I'd dropped something and that's why he was calling.

😂😂 It’s mine and my partner’s anniversary next weekend and he’s booked a very fancy hotel for the weekend and pre-ordered champagne for our arrival and everything… I saw they have Asti on the wine list and am already more excited about that and plan on having it at dinner! Certainly no aiming high here. I love an Asti!

TwattyMcFuckFace · 11/01/2026 19:15

'No' is pretty universal.

He would've understood that.

As an aside, what does 'xD' mean?

Yes well hindsight, you know.

Also the element of not being standoffish as I have to eat in the same room as the guy for the next week so my first instinct was to be polite. And as I said, I did do the no sign (cut off hand gesture) but he'd turned away.

xD is a laughing face.

My friend was learning Greek while on holiday there and was struggling with past/present tense. A pair of his trousers fell from their balcony and he went downstairs to the host to get them and told her 'I am dropping my trousers' she apparently looked rather alarmed!
