What car do you have and do you like it?

Morning all
This isn't a survey dressed up. I'm looking to replace my car later this year and curious what car you have and do you like it?

As it's only me now (and small dog) I have a Peugeot 208 and really love it. I don't do huge miles but it's zippy enough on the motorway when I do. I wouldn't have considered a Peugeot before but DP has one (bigger model) and liked it.

Get another Peugeot?
maybe a bit newer, with any extras you like and similar size.

my car is an Audi a3, its 14 years old. I really like it. I’d have another. It sounds boring but it does everything I need! Nothing else really appeals to me.

We have a 3 year old Nissan Leaf (EV), the last model, not the latest one. We had an old Suzuki Grand Vitara before, and another SUV before that, so my opinions will be comparing it against those.

Pros

  • goes like a bomb including uphill, never any problems getting up steep hills
  • first time we have had an automatic and I do like not having to think about changing gears, especially when needing to get out of a side road into a gap in a stream of traffic - just press and go!
  • Can set it to defrost itself before we even get in it in the morning
  • Cheap to run, especially in the summer. More expensive in the winter because we have the heater on which depletes the battery. We do have our own car charger point though. Costs about £5 to charge overnight (economy 7), needs to be charged once a week in summer and twice a week in winter, for what we use it for.
  • Comfortable enough
  • Really effective heating and cooling
  • All sorts of features we didn't have before (but which most modern cars probably have. Automatic wipers and lights, lane change warning, proximity warning, parking camera etc.)
  • Good media connectivity
  • You don't need to insert a key to open or start it - just need to have the key with you

Cons

  • too low for me, I struggle to get in and out. It wouldn't be as bad if there wasn't quite a high sill to the doors. I am quite decrepit though.
  • not as much room inside. Big console between the driver and passenger which cuts down leg space
  • Smaller boot. It's not actually that small but it's a different shape and somehow it doesn't seem as roomy.
  • Doors are heavy - front doors are wide and open wide, so if they are fully open I can't reach to shut the passenger door. Door to boot is very heavy. I'm used to side opening doors for the boot rather than lifting doors.
  • Range is only about 180 miles on a good day
  • Haven't had to do it yet, but tyres are more expensive because the car is heavy, so I'm told

If I could buy whatever I wanted I would go for an electric SUV with really good range. Very expensive though!

16 year old Yaris. Love it

DisplayPurposesOnly · 11/01/2026 09:48

All my cars since the mid 1990s have been secondhand Ford Fiestas. It's quite annoying that Ford have stopped making them. My next one will be my last.

I’ve got a cupra born EV and just about to swap it for a Renault 5 EV. DH is looking at polestars for our family car.

I have two. A mini, which an absolutely love. So much fun to drive. I can get two kids, a dog and almost for a week away i pack smartly.
And a VW T Roc. Really nice to drive, lots of space but not too big.

EssentialGarage · 11/01/2026 09:52

Why are you looking at replacing it? You sound happy with it.

chunkyBoo · 11/01/2026 09:54

Currently have a Volvo V60 estate. It’s really comfortable and big enough for my tall children and medium sized dog.

ive had it about a year, before that I had a BMW 120 sport - loved it but was getting a bit too small to have the whole family in it

crumpetandcoffee · 11/01/2026 09:55

Mini Countryman. I love it!

Raisondeetre · 11/01/2026 09:58

Citroen Picasso years ago. The best car we ever had. Never found Anything as good.

muddyford · 11/01/2026 09:59

Ford C-Max. I like it as it has a cavernous boot to transport two dogs and is wide enough to take young dog's crate folded behind the front seats. Plus all the clobber I take to see my family. I don't love it, though I loved my VW Golf.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 11/01/2026 10:03

Twelve year old Skoda - love it. My last car was a Skoda and it was so reliable and this one is the same. It's a diesel and its only drawback is that it's a wee bit big now I don't do many miles, but I can get a LOT of stuff in it (it's an Octavia) which came in useful when multiple of my kids all moved house on the same day.

I live very rurally and the weight and solidity of it are reassuring on a snowy night in the middle of nowhere, and it has never let me down.

DoItTwoDay · 11/01/2026 10:05

Vauxhall Zafira Tourer.

Decent enough width for three adults in the backseat (necessary with 3 dc, two teens). And the backseats are adjustable and slide back quite a bit - even two 6 foot + teens can get their legs in comfortably enough. Huge boot, necessary for the dog etc. And two pop up seats, handy when giving teenagers lifts.

KnickerlessFlannel · 11/01/2026 10:05

BYD atto, it's so easy to drive and super comfortable. It's quite big but doesn't feel big to drive.

Iheartmysmart · 11/01/2026 10:13

I’ve got an 18 year old Smart Fortwo convertible and absolutely love it. It costs me next to nothing to run, really nippy around town but is also fine for a motorway journey.

My preference has always been for small, slightly quirky cars and I’ve had numerous classic minis, a Citroen 2CV and a Fiat 126 amongst others. A normal car would bore the life out of me.

Fortunately there is only me to consider so I can drive whatever I like.

Shade17 · 11/01/2026 10:26

The answer will be something Japanese, with the exception of Nissan as they’re now utter dog shit due to the influence of Renault.

Interesting, I'm looking at the Renault too as my partner can get a good deal through work too.

Renault scenic electric, I love it, really easy to drive. I am a bit bitter though as my company changed the grading after I ordered mine and my colleagues Tavanscan is amazing.

Toyota ch-r love it
does 55 mpg

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 11/01/2026 10:38

Ancient suzuki celerio. Dh doesn't care about luxury or bells and whistles, this one runs on an oily rag, no road tax. But its a box on wheels, hates hills. We had a subaru rental in Australia automatic, ac, Bluetooth, parking thingy. Was lovely.

OnePercentBetterEachDay · 11/01/2026 10:39

Toyota Yaris Hybrid. It's super reliable. I love it.

MushyPeasAndMintSauce · 11/01/2026 10:45

My husband has a Skoda kodiaq bloody love it.
I have Nissan Juke 23 plate and also love it but the Skoda has the edge.

Sonolanona · 11/01/2026 10:47

I have a Smart forfour and it's an excellent little car (a newer shaped one not the really old ones) The rear seats and the passenger one go completely flat so I can for example, go to Ikea and fit a wardrobe in! They have the smallest turning circle next to a London taxi and are cheap to run. My 26kg dog fits in the boot, but I usually leave the back seats down for her to have a huge space.
No car tax, bluetooth etc is seamless, 65 plate . Not very torque-y compared to my previous diesel but handles motorways fine.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 11/01/2026 10:55

We have a Mercedes which is a very lovely car ... won't be able to afford to keep having cars of this quality, despite what husband thinks. Would look at Toyota, Honda, volvo, Peugeot next.
