How much to sell super king mattress for?

I’m trying to sell a super king ottoman bed and mattress. Someone just wants the mattress which has always been used with a topper and about four years old. Good quality pocket sprung . What should I ask for it? It cost about £800.

Then drop the price to something reasonable

What do you consider reasonable? It’s a feather and ball velvet ottoman bed in immaculate condition with a good quality mattress always used with a topper.

£700

Good God!

Second hand goods don't ususally sell for more than 10% of their original investment. Even less if they are 4 years old. Even less if it's a mattress.

It’s a 4 year old used main bed, in a size that not everyone can fit in their house. £200 including mattress at a max.

      1. Used matresses are not in demand.

I’ve tried but no takers

That’s because few people want to sleep on an old mattress. Insisting on including it is just you passing on the problem of getting rid of it, at a price!

I think youl get more for the bed altogether . It’s going to be hard to sell just the bed on its own so you will have to sell it cheaply.

I bought a second hand bed recently but didn't want a second hand mattress, just because I'd have had to hire a van to transport it. The bed came to pieces and would fit it the car. I'm sure I'm not the only one in that position. Then of course some people are ok with second hand beds, but prefer new mattresses.

ScaredOfFlying · 10/01/2026 11:54

20% of the purchase price of the bed, clear note saying anyone who wants the mattress can have it for free if they buy the bed.

Is this a thing!! Do people buy USED mattresses?

For some it’s the only way they can afford to furnish a home

I’m not insisting!! I’m happy to sell them separately!

I think the size of this bed limits who will be interested for 2 reasons. The buyer will have to arrange the transport and not too many people have the space for a super king other than in a master bedroom.. I wonder if you would be luckier selling the whole thing if you quote a delivery price. If selling just the mattress to somebody interested then I'd ask for £100 and haggle down. The bed frame, unless a good brand and not too distinctive will be hard to shift I think. The buyer of a second hand bed is on a budget and the mattress for a super king is very expensive if somebody wants a new one, which most do. 2 lots of transport for them too if they buy separately

What price did you give them for the mattress in the end then?

ScaredOfFlying · 10/01/2026 11:56

Just ask the potential mattress buyer what they are willing to pay and bite their hand off to save you a council disposal fee.

ScaredOfFlying · 10/01/2026 11:58

People who have houses big enough for super king beds don’t generally have to buy second hand furniture. And it’s too big to be a spare room bed in most homes.

ScaredOfFlying · 10/01/2026 12:13

Have you tried linking to the Feather & Ball site in your ad? There are a lot of cheapo velvet beds out there and someone in the second hand market won’t necessarily be au fait with which brands are good, so all they’ll be seeing is what seems to be an overpriced second hand bed. You might do better to list on eBay to get hits from people who search by brand?

A dd and Sil once sold a Tempur mattress they hadn’t had for very long - found it too hot. Had already bought it 2nd hand from someone else who hadn’t had it long - maybe also too hot. Dd and SiL sold it for more than they’d paid!

Hallywally · 10/01/2026 13:15

Ugh- buying a second hand mattress is so manky. 🤮 You can new ones relatively cheaply.

But they are poor quality - I am genuinely interested why buying a secondhand mattress is so bad, but people stay in hotels which have thousands of people staying in them, doing all sorts.

GRCP · 10/01/2026 13:40

I’d take their hand off for £50

Lollylavender · 10/01/2026 13:42

A used mattress 🤮

Imagine all the potential bodily fluids soaked in there… and there’s no way of cleaning it!!!

Thewonderfuleveryday · 10/01/2026 13:43

Nothing. Just be glad it goes to a new home and you didn't have to take it to the tip.

Lollylavender · 10/01/2026 13:45

And of course potential bed bugs… 🤢

But why are hotels ok?

And hotels are full of bed bugs

Hotels have a reputation to lose.

A second hand used mattress owner doesn’t. The opposite is true - they have an incentive to get rid of a bed bug infested mattress.

Moveoverdarlin · 10/01/2026 14:12

I would tell them £600 to go together. Or £150 for the mattress if you collect this weekend.
