WWYD with a £1000 win? Keep or share?

I’ve just found out I’ve won £1000 in a competition! It was totally unexpected as I didn’t even realise I had entered it (it was automatic with a shopping purchase).

WWYD if you won it?

A) Keep it all for a personal treat
B) Keep it between just you and DH
C) Split evenly with family (DH and 3 teen kids)
D) Keep it by for family trips / meals etc
E) Use it for bills and living expenses
F) Put it in the family holiday fund
G) Other (please say what!)

??? 🎉

This feels like it has scam all over it. Do you have the money in your account? Because otherwise I'd tread carefully.

333FionaG · 08/01/2026 12:59

I would give £100 each to the kids, and blow the rest on something you really want. Want, not need.

Kpo58 · 08/01/2026 13:00

G) Keep it and work out what to do with it when it's needed or you have a plan for it.

800metresprint · 08/01/2026 13:01

It’s genuine. I emailed them directly (it’s a reputable company) to ask for confirmation and double checked the competition online and it all adds up. I got an email from an actual person (who does work there as they are on LinkedIn) and they confirmed it’s genuine. I did think scam at first but I’m 99.9% sure it’s genuine now I’ve followed it all up! Mind you I don’t have the actual money yet but it was a genuine competition!

Two years ago I won £1000 in an online competition. I didn't fully believe it (or tell anyone till it was in my account).
I told my 3 teen /adult dc. I gave it all to eldest dc as was just buying first house. Dc used it to buy appliances and furniture. The understanding is I'll give the other two the same when they buy their first house.
If I won now I'd probably tell no-one and pop it into my savings for the other dc.

I would either use it for family trips, buy Premium Bonds or pay off a bit of the mortgage.

This. You don't have to spend or earmark it for something straight away

Given that 1K isn't a life changing amount of money... currently I dont have any debts so I'd blow it on a treat.
Probably take my partner and 1 on a holiday to Iceland as thats my dream destination.

user1492757084 · 08/01/2026 13:09

Straight off the mortgage.

Coconutter24 · 08/01/2026 13:13

I’d just keep it in my account until I wanted a treat or to take the family out or something. I certainly wouldn’t pay £1k to my mortgage!! That seems such a waste

TheRuffleandthePearl · 08/01/2026 13:13

Holiday fund would be my pick. But there’s no rush. Have a think for a while!

Netcurtainnelly · 08/01/2026 13:28

Buy a thousand thunderball lottery tickets.

CautiousLurker2 · 08/01/2026 13:29

D or F.

Bjorkdidit · 08/01/2026 13:31

Depends on your financial position and how money is usually shared any of the options could be best, or saving for emergencies.

But assuming you're fairly comfortable so no debt and already have savings, I'd spend some on a family treat and some on myself.

Jugendstiel · 08/01/2026 13:32

I'd share it with immediate family, saving a good chunk for myself too. Some students of mine gave me an unexpectedly generous gift voucher for a shop recently and I immediately asked DC, DC's partners and DH what they'd like from the shop - everyone got a small treat and I got a few, as I'd done the hard work to earn the gift in the first place.

800metresprint · 08/01/2026 20:38

Iceland sounds lovely! Can’t really take 5 of us there for a grand though! I’ll sit with it for a while and have a think. Thanks for the suggestions!

I'd plan a really good holiday for next year, see it as a headstart for saving for that and hope I didn't need a new boiler in the meantime...

About 15 years ago my aunty (not my real aunty just a friend of my mum) sent me a £1 scratch card and I won £20. I cashed it and and asked for 20 new cards

the news agent in my works building told me no he would only give me 5 cards a day. This was decades before the sensible limits guides. I still wonder if some one got my big win in the 4 days it took me to spend my £20

fouroclockrock · 08/01/2026 21:34

I found out i won a bucket of popcorn today and im not planning on sharing with anyone.

800metresprint · 08/01/2026 21:52

Lol at popcorn, I wouldn’t be sharing either!

Keep it towards a dental implant I need.

DawnAnn · 08/01/2026 22:02

Congrats!! I would use it to overpay the mortgage.
