Storm Goretti - drive today or tomorrow?

I need to drive from Gloucestershire to Liverpool (up the M5 and M6). Can't leave any earlier than 2:30pm today, but must leave by tomorrow morning at the latest.

From what I can see, the Midlands has a yellow warning of snow from 5pm and an amber warning from 8pm, but there's talk of it maybe being sleet not snow.

Would you leave at 2:30pm today, put your foot down and hope to get ahead of the bad weather? Or go tomorrow morning instead, although it will have had more time to fall by then and may be worse? Birmingham is often a bottleneck even when the weather is fine, so the journey can be anywhere between 3 and 6 hours.

Particularly interested to hear from people who know the M5/M6 route.

I'd go today at 2.30. it's not due to hit until around 4pm. I would make sure I had provisions in the car and extra clothes should you need to extend your trip.

Go early and beat the weather. I'm in the East Midlands and so far its just foggy and cold....

Definitely go today asap. The M6 is almost always a complete shitshow and Fri is the worst day to travel. And that’s before weather issues hit!

Edit: And make sure you have warm clothes and food and water in the car just in case (you should do this anyway whenever travelling any distance but especially when bad weather is forecast).

My vote is for this afternoon. We're in Gloucestershire and have friends visiting tomorrow from the Midlands and am assuming there's a strong possibility they won't come .

Just remember to top up all the necessaries - fuel, water, oil, screen wash before you set off.
Keep bottled water, snacks, warm coat, thick blanket, and charged up power banks!

Pump your tyres up, full tank, full window washer, blanket, food and water in the car, drive to conditions.
