Dualit Toasters

Have been given a gift voucher which I want to put towards a Dualit Toaster. I have always wanted one, but could never justify the cost! Have been online to have a look and, frankly, was bewildered at the choice. Can anyone recommend the model they have, or tell me why it is one I should avoid?!

I spent £80 with discounts and boots advantage points on a 2 slice classic, over 20 years ago. It's had a new clockwork timer and a new element since then. Easy DIY job. Both items were comparable in price to a new electronic toaster but it's so much less landfill.

EnchantedDays · 06/01/2026 14:38

We've got the classic 4 slice stainless steel one, had it for about 25 years and love it, never burns anything (it took a little while to get the knack of timing for different types of bread and toast). Those who have changed elements how easy was that? Some of ours are going now.

At work we have the 4 slice Dualit Lite, which just has a dial and pop-up, it gets used at least a couple of times a day and we've had it for maybe 10 years, it's very good too. But I prefer the look and the timing system of the classic ones.

Bought a chrome new gen 4 slot last year from JL. Love it - nice and quick and takes bread and crumpets. Have bought one for DD and SIL on the basis that if it goes wrong he can just repair it. The first time he used it the toast was black as based on his experience of their old one that took 10 minutes, he turned the dial to max!

I got a gorgeous cream 4 slice one from TK Maxx for £79.99! I’m fully expecting it to last for years but tbh I don’t think anything lasts these days (Except perhaps KitchenAid stand mixers, I’m shocked at how well built they still are, one of my favourite things I’ve bought!)

DP moved in last year and brought this with him.
I previously had cheap 4 slice toasters with 2 long slots, no good for 4 slices as they aren't deep enough, but great for 2 slices lying down rather than upright.

I hate it.
Too big and bulky & takes up more counter space.
Doesn't pop up, have to manually lower & lift.
Have to set the timer each time instead of just pushing the switch down.
Have to check how many slices have been chosen, and put your bread in the right place.
Arrghhh.

I'd much rather have my cheap , thinner, toaster which lasts 5-10 years for £20 (although the first one I brought was probably £10, and the most recent £15).

How odd, mine lifts automatically?

Thanks for all your comments. I hadn't realised that they had such longevity, nor that they don't pop up. I will have to have a think about that! Don't you end up with toast that regularly burnt?

Mine pops up! Definitely Dualit

Does it not have this lever at the bottom?

There are just so many things I hate about it, but the fact that the toast doesn't pop up when it is done is the most annoying.

Cream four slice Dualit. It’s still a thing of beauty fourteen years after purchase!

rightoguvnor · 06/01/2026 16:45

Another with the cream and chrome 4 slice, which does pop up. When it pops it doesn’t fully expose the toast, you bring the handle up a little more to get the toast out - I think it’s designed to keep the toast warm.
mine is 8 years in and I think just entering its sunset years.
i do think that those made in the 2010s once the brand had become so much more
popular are not as well made as the older models - we’ve certainly found this with their kettles.
(I might be a old curmudgeon though as I feel the same about Bosch washing machines, they’re not as good as in the old days 😁)

Celebrating 30 years of our dualit toaster this year. 5* would buy again.
We have in comparison gone through a lot of kettles. Anyone know if a dualit kettle has good longevity?

We had the matching kettle and it wasn’t in heavy use at all. Lasted maybe 3 years, compared to toaster at about 15…
Kettles we’ve liked were a Siemens Porsche that did about 10 years and currently a Bosch.
My relatives get through a kettle a year by my reckoning. Smeg, too heavy, Alessi stove top, with whistle(!) burned dry as they forgot you can’t leave them unattended. They’ve had a copper one that burned you if you weren’t careful and now have an equally useless coffee pot shaped thing with too many electronics and a spout that dribbles.
Hope that’s helpful!

PickAChew · 06/01/2026 18:37

I have the plastic dualit kettle and it's really well designed - easy to fill and easy to pick up, even when full and hot - I have arthritic thumbs and weak wrists need a light, ergonomic kettle. It's our second one. The first became a nuisance after about 3 years as we have fairly soft water but when things do fur up, there's no shifting it, so it started to switch off at random. The same happened to the two Bosch kettles we had before it.

We have the 4 slice chrome. To be honest, we don’t love it. Very clunky, hate the timer and no pop up, don’t think it toasts that evenly for the price, and it scratches easily. Much preferred the John Lewis copy we had before it but we are stuck with this one now 😆

Edited

Exactly the same here. I think it’s shit, won’t be buying another.

ShyMaryEllen · 06/01/2026 19:24

These are mine. The kettle is only two years old, so I can't vouch for its longevity, but I love the look of it. The only thing that took a bit of getting used to was the handle on the lid. As it's centred, there is a knack to getting the lid open when the kettle is hot, and you have to do that to fill it. I can somehow just do it now, but it was tricky at first.

I’ve got a 6 slice Dualit toaster that must be almost 20 years old. It was the only thing I definitely didn’t want XH to take after the divorce 😂. I love it so much. I bought it after working with one as a teenager in a restaurant.

cinquanta · 06/01/2026 21:54

LemaxObsessive · 06/01/2026 16:35

Mine pops up! Definitely Dualit

But probably not the classic Dualit toaster.

Dbank · 06/01/2026 22:22

The Classic ones, which I believe are still made in the Uk, will probably last longer than you will. Although you might need to replace the timer, switch or element at some point. (spares are readily available)

My current one is 40+ years old and on its second timer, and elements. I also have two more in the loft which out lived the relatives I bought them for, and still work as new.

Yes they are expensive, but satisfying to use, and far greener in the long run.

The "cooking" time is defined by how far you twist the timer, normally from cold with a standard slice, 2.5 is about right, if you immediately put in another slice (i.e. the toaster is already hot) then "2".

Or "2" for stale or thin bread. You'll soon work it out

They also have refurbished ones link

Any chance of a photo?

Onlyashappyas · 07/01/2026 10:26

We’ve had ours for 5 years. 4 slice version. Love it. I also love it more when I found out last year that the person who assembles it puts their name underneath! Ours was made by Michael incase anyone cares (or would like to play the game!).
We bought it from Costco which was the best price at the time.

Stirrupcup · 07/01/2026 10:33

Mmmm. Like with all appliances nowadays, will a modern one costing 200 quid (😱) last as long as one bought 35 years ago? My sceptical brain thinks not.

Our Breville toaster is also still going strong after 12 years with no repairs needed at all. Cost £20

yonem · 07/01/2026 17:16

TheOliveFinch · 06/01/2026 13:55

We had a red 4 slice one and I wasn’t that impressed, it toasted well but the casing quickly cracked in a number of places and looked a mess. I would only consider another one if it had no plastic side panels at all

the newgen/classic one doesn’t have any plastic panels, the casing is all metal

TheOliveFinch · 07/01/2026 17:24

@yonem good to know this as I must admit it wasn’t what I expected from Dualit

dabdab · 07/01/2026 17:59

Ours currently 25 yrs old and going strong. Three slice, daily use, family of 5, never a problem, only had to replace 1 element once which was quick and easy to do.

Thanks, I think we have accepted a new kettle is needed every 3 years or so.
