Dualit Toasters

Have been given a gift voucher which I want to put towards a Dualit Toaster. I have always wanted one, but could never justify the cost! Have been online to have a look and, frankly, was bewildered at the choice. Can anyone recommend the model they have, or tell me why it is one I should avoid?!

Thanks for all your comments. I hadn't realised that they had such longevity, nor that they don't pop up. I will have to have a think about that! Don't you end up with toast that regularly burnt?

You only get burnt toast if you set the timer for too long. Not really any different to a normal toaster except the timer is clockwork.

Ours is about 25 years old now.

yonem · 05/01/2026 22:47

I’ve got the cream newgen and would definitely recommend. The only thing I would say is we have the 2 slice because we don’t eat much toast per sitting but even so if I were to buy it again I think I’d get the 4 slice because things like crumpets come in 3s.

Toast burns less than with a toaster which pops up, because you can check on it whenever you want without interrupting the toasting cycle - the slots are on like a seesaw with the handle which is independent of the timer.

I also have the sandwich cage for mine which I find useful for things like teacakes that might otherwise be prone to getting stuck.

NotMeNoNo · 05/01/2026 23:08

We have the 4 slice catering style one (Newgen Classic is current version) at least 20 years of daily use. This is the only sort worth getting . I think we've replaced 2 elements on the most used slots. We have the toasting cages which are useful for buns or toasted sandwiches. If we have tall bread I sometimes turn it over halfway. But the homemade bread from my bread maker fits in fine.

It doesn't pop up but it stops toasting when the time is up so your toast just stays warm. I'm sure they are not for everyone but I think they are really worth it and IMO add style to your kitchen rather than looking like clutter.

Our Dualit architect toaster (4 slice) is still going strong after 10 years.

Jellyslothbridge · 05/01/2026 23:24

Celebrating 30 years of our dualit toaster this year. 5* would buy again.
We have in comparison gone through a lot of kettles. Anyone know if a dualit kettle has good longevity?

BeareSonOfWulf · 05/01/2026 23:38

Our Dualit kettle lasted 12 years, then the heating element died. I never replaced it (heat water on stovetop now) because I hated descaling it. We were hard on it though—used it at least several times a day.

OMarina · 05/01/2026 23:39

I think we must have been very unlucky as we went through two four slice Dualit in the space of three years. My mum, however, has only just replaced her Dualit after a twenty year innings!

We had one for a short time, like this one:

I can't remember exactly what went wrong with it, but it was something gets like water leaking out of the transparent panel.

We replaced it with this Bosch one, and it's going well (probably 7 or 8 years in): https://amzn.eu/d/gyGxSML

There's a newer model now, but this is the one we have.

DesperatelyConfused6 · 06/01/2026 00:35

My parents have had a 6 slice one for approaching 30 years. My siblings & I regular squabble over who gets to inherit it in years to come! 😂
It's had a few new elements but it is like a member of the family.

Jellycatspyjamas · 06/01/2026 00:53

I have a 2 slice one that’s going on for 20 years, never had a problem with it and it’s never needed repair so far. I’d buy another in a heartbeat.

Cushylife · 06/01/2026 00:59

Our timer has gone a few times and the elements are temperamental - it’s a 20 year old 4 slice. I keep meaning to replace the elements.

BreadstickBurglar · 06/01/2026 09:43

My mum knows how to make toast thanks 😂

It’s set perfectly to make toast if you take it out within one min but if you leave it in because e.g. you’re grabbing your grandchild from doing something dreadful it can burn. Will suggest she has a look at the elements as it’s clearly a bug not a feature.

Georgiepud · 06/01/2026 09:49

20+ years and still going. Wouldn't consider anything else.

(I did replacedl the matching kettle jug bought at the same time because the lid got all limescaly and wouldn't fit properly.)

user665178392470 · 06/01/2026 09:53

I reckon ours must be 25yrs plus - it’s outlived numerous kettles and is now competing with a boiling water tap. Still looks as good as new too, wish everything was built to last like that is!

Well it’s either your mum or the toaster, and there seems to be the cumulative equivalent of centuries of experience on this thread using Dualit toasters and not one incidence of burnt toast other than your mum. I usually leave my toast in (as I’m always rushing around in the morning) and it hasn’t burnt once in over 30 years of daily use.

CoastalCalm · 06/01/2026 10:10

4 slide architect here and 5 years in it’s never failed us - I love that we can have separate toasted levels as DH prefers his toast much lighter than I do

Girlintheframe · 06/01/2026 10:26

We have had the 2 slice lite toaster for years now. I want to replace it with the Vario one but frustratingly it still works 😂. The outer however is plastic and that has cracked, possibly during all our house moves but the actual toaster itself is still going strong. It’s easy to clean and toasts really well.

It may depend on which type of Dualit toaster. The traditional range seems to last a long time and can be easily repaired if they do break.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/01/2026 20:05

We have one with two 'toast' slots and one extra wide with a cage for toasted sandwiches. It is about 30 years old and has had the elements replaced once. I think they may now do one with just the two extra wide slots so you can do two toasted sandwiches at once (this is what I would buy today).

I have this one, similar age. Replaced elements more than once, but we're a family of four with continous usage so all good.

Cushylife · 06/01/2026 11:40

The handle on the crumb tray broke on ours too - again we replaced it - it's starting to feel like Trigger's broom.😂

Christmascherry · 06/01/2026 13:39

Burnt bagel again this morning 🫣😆

Papyrophile · 06/01/2026 13:50

We've had ours (chrome/enamel) for 37 years. A few elements have been replaced. The rest is original.

TheOliveFinch · 06/01/2026 13:55

We had a red 4 slice one and I wasn’t that impressed, it toasted well but the casing quickly cracked in a number of places and looked a mess. I would only consider another one if it had no plastic side panels at all

Chasingsquirrels · 06/01/2026 13:58

DP moved in last year and brought this with him.
I previously had cheap 4 slice toasters with 2 long slots, no good for 4 slices as they aren't deep enough, but great for 2 slices lying down rather than upright.

I hate it.
Too big and bulky & takes up more counter space.
Doesn't pop up, have to manually lower & lift.
Have to set the timer each time instead of just pushing the switch down.
Have to check how many slices have been chosen, and put your bread in the right place.
Arrghhh.

I'd much rather have my cheap , thinner, toaster which lasts 5-10 years for £20 (although the first one I brought was probably £10, and the most recent £15).

Mine was my grandfather’s and it must be nearly 50 years old! Still going strong and working perfectly!
