EDF Sunday Saver challenge- anyone doing this ?

Currently sat in the dark with as many electrical appliances as possible turned off. You probably think I’m mad. I’m just slightly curious as to whether it can be done.

Currently, my weekly tracker is showing nothing as to whether I’m on target or not!

Anyone else sat in the dark?

Yes, I've only managed it once by fluke a few weeks ago and got 8 hours free on the Sunday nothing since 🤣

When dc aren't at school we manage it regularly (although Christmas week said we should have had 12 hours and then they said not enough data) as have main meal at lunch time. But when they're at school we struggle. Because evening meal usually needs to be at 5pm due to sports in evening. Cooking seems to be what affects ours the most.
I do my washing in the day, often use slow cooker in day, switch lights off. Encourage dc to charge their phones after 7pm but its a bit hit and miss.
My aunt and uncle get 12-16 hours every week but are both retired so can work their life around it. They literally spend all day Sunday washing, ironing, hoovering, batch cooking and baking for the week ahead.

In the dark? I can't. I need to do paperwork and be able to see the things in the room - including not stepping on the dog.

No data has yet shown in the app, ive a feeling it’s not going to either as it can’t show my energy breakdowns in the tab alongside it.

sigh, I’ve been saving the towels and bedding for a while and using spares.

I didn’t relish sitting in the dark watching tv on my tablet either. I’ll be pretty annoyed if I did it for five evenings only to find it hadn’t been able to log the data.

Not overly sure how I did it because I wasn’t overly careful the rest of the week and got 16 hours for next Sunday.

Jeez, not sure I’d want to be doing this again, but, anyway after being laid up and not able to do much due to surgery just before Christmas I had a ridiculous amount of laundry to do. The washing machine been on since 9am and the tumble dryer soon after, took dogs for a walk and did leave everything turned off as.none of adult DC home.

batch cooked huge spag Bol, a curry, and a casserole, and massive pot of soup, so that’s three all the dinners and lunches pretty much cooked for during the week. (None of which I now fancy 🤦‍♀️)

put the dishwasher on and then put on again with a cleaning bottle thing in it so that’s all shiny and nice.

Im up to £12, still got at least three more loads of washing to do and dry and then im putting the oven on its industrial clean which makes me wince when I see the smart meter start whirring.

also charged all the kids tablets, my phone, and as many other things as I can find like our torch I use when walking the dog in winter.

I’ve still got another six hours but think I’ll give up soon 😂😀😂

Oh and apparently I can do it all again next Sunday if I’m track in the week. Err maybe not.

I’m with EDF and always try for this but never get it. We’re out of the house 8-4 on weekdays so can’t use electricity then. Our ‘target’ is to only use 11% of our electricity at peak times which is ridiculous and unachievable. We do sadly need to switch lights on and eat hot food. I actually emailed them to tell them I thought it was daft but they were unmoved 😆. British Gas is much better because it gives all smart meter customers 4 hours free each week.

Tanktanktank · 25/01/2026 06:57

I got four free hours this week without even trying.

I was so tired after last Sundays antics it took me a few days to recover and actually wouldn’t want to be that industrious again.

it was an interesting exercise but I don’t think I’ll be active in achieving it every time it happens

An update, I’ve regularly received four hours free most weekends since February. Although nice to do washing and use the tumble dryer without thinking of the cost I find it restricting and annoying. I’m down to basically using it for two washes I want to tumble and may batch cook the occasional large meal but decided I won’t be a slave to it.

I was regularly getting 12 and even 16 hours up to January when I'd wash, tumble dry and iron my bedding, towels, everything plus I'd put the oven on from the get go to warm the house and batch cook, bake, charge everything dishwasher and clean.

However, we went away in January until March and since then, despite doing exactly the same as I always did between 4pm and 7pm, I am on my fourth week of zilch free electric.

Tanktanktank · 20/04/2026 19:06

I had a period of nothing. Make sure you’re signed up in the app. I only get
four hours occasionally now
