Bottomless pit children rant

This is lighthearted before anyone thinks I am really moaning.

My boys are 7 and nearly 5. They never stop being hungry. Both are tall for their age but skinny and very robust. Today they both had a huge bowl of porridge with fruit, nut butter and flaxseed in it, a mid-morning snack cheese, nuts and an apple, then a substantial lunch of homemade lentil and bean soup and 2 slices of toast, fruit. Then we went to soft play where they had a small chocolate bar and a drink. Then at home they had some oatcakes and another apple, then they've just had dinner of 3 fish fingers, a huge pile of new potatoes, peas and green beans and then a bowl of grewk yoghurt and banana. And my nearly 5 year old is still hungry!!!! He eats more than me, God help me when they are teenagers!!

Sounds delicious! Maybe try a bit more protein? Eggs and bacon for breakfast? Are they having full fat milk on the porridge, and butter on the toast/Oatcakes?

DorisTheFinkasaurus · 05/01/2026 17:18

They eat so well! Sounds like such a great diet! As a tall, thin person with a speedy metabolism my whole life, I would say get some chicken into that lentil and bean soup, use whole milk and good butter, and
replace fish fingers with salmon. I think they need more animal protein with lunch and dinner. They’ll feel more satiated.

We are a pescatarian family and they do get plenty of eggs and fish. I go through about 2 dozen eggs a week its bonkers. They eat a lot of cheese, butter and milk as well. My youngest just ate a small bowl of mixed nuts and another banana and another glass of milk. They also love houmous and quorn. We are a bit limited as one of my children is coeliac. Does anyone here have teenage boys? What should I prepare for??!! Maybe I should start stocking piling now haha

Wait until they hit puberty.....

chisping · 05/01/2026 17:53

Actually I had my two adult sons home at Christmas and it's astonishing how much they still eat in their 20s.

They have loads of protein in that menu. Or do you think it’s not protein if it’s not meat? 🫤

Teenagers are insatiable…..

Bobiverse · 05/01/2026 17:56

What is their portion size though? Some people eat like birds so a “huge” bowl of soup would be one ladleful.

Wowsersbrowsers · 05/01/2026 17:56

Are you and your partner big eaters? Mine are similar and we just lob a stack of toast down them if they're still hungry.

This is what I am mildy worried about. I have some knowledge of nutrition through my work and do plan their diets pretty well I would say but it costs me an absolute fortune now. Can't imagine what our food bill will be in a few years!!

I have 3 DC, all adult men now. Be prepared to hear your fridge opening and shutting all day long. Pasta and melted cheese or anything were my friends and I had to hide the smoked salmon and good stuff in the salad drawer.

Moderate eaters I would say. Middle age and perimenopause is hitting me so I have to be a lot more careful than I used to. The boys eat more than us for sure. My husband who works long hours barely gets a look in with the fruit bowl.

Edited

I think I need a bigger fridge! When we serve pasta now they have pretty much the same portion as my husband and I!

A bowl of porridge is nearly to the top of a standard supermarket cereal bowl. I shove extra calories in it too like peanut butter to make it more substantial.

I find apples make me feel
starving after, no idea why, I just avoid them
now.
Ultra thick yogurt with a bit of honey is a good snack, my boys (men) love that.

Not only did I have teenage boys, I had weightlifting teenage boys. Between the two of them they can easily eat a dozen eggs in a sitting, plus rice, tomatoes, bagels and avocados. And that’s just breakfast.

Christmaseree · 05/01/2026 18:04

Could you fry up their new potatoes in some olive oil to make them a bit more satisfying?

My oldest is obsessed with apples and has about 3 a day! I do sometimes spread them with almond butter to make it more filling. But usually I just find apple cores everywhere. They eat greek yoghurt most days for a pudding with berries or banana and honey. I get through at least 2 of those large 5% fage greek yoghurt things a week!

I think I need to start a stockpile like my parents did in covid lol. My mum had about 30 bags of rice and tinned tomatoes in her wardrobe.

They need more protein and fat.
Olive oil on veg, butter in scrambled eggs etc.
Maybe Greek yogurt for breakfast with the seeds, nuts, banana etc.
Also check they’re not thirsty / bored
