Bottomless pit children rant

This is lighthearted before anyone thinks I am really moaning.

My boys are 7 and nearly 5. They never stop being hungry. Both are tall for their age but skinny and very robust. Today they both had a huge bowl of porridge with fruit, nut butter and flaxseed in it, a mid-morning snack cheese, nuts and an apple, then a substantial lunch of homemade lentil and bean soup and 2 slices of toast, fruit. Then we went to soft play where they had a small chocolate bar and a drink. Then at home they had some oatcakes and another apple, then they've just had dinner of 3 fish fingers, a huge pile of new potatoes, peas and green beans and then a bowl of grewk yoghurt and banana. And my nearly 5 year old is still hungry!!!! He eats more than me, God help me when they are teenagers!!

Sounds like a brag about how healthy and homemade it all is! I’m glad the chocolate bar was only small!

justasking111 · 06/01/2026 14:44

When in hospital recently I opted for a cheese omelette for the evening meal and a bowl of fruit salad. I'd forgotten how delicious a cheese omelette is.

Witcherwitcher · 06/01/2026 14:52

@justasking111 I agree! Now our DC are back at Uni cheese omelettes and cheesy beans on toast is a luxury meal me and DH are looking forward to! Sick to the back teeth of hunks of meat and fish 😂 Not as much flossing or interdental management needed either!!!

@bumphousebump

im sure OP has enough on and jobs to do without having to look after hens, muck them out, feed them, etc! Not to mention the risk of rats associated.

It was meant tongue in cheek…..

Oh yes, love a cheese omlette!

Thank you for this! I'll give it a try!

They sound like they eat so well! Doesn’t help with your food bills, but I’d rather that than have a child who eats like a bird! 😊

I agree on upping the protein. You’ve had some great suggestions.

Joeydoesntsharefood25 · 06/01/2026 15:08

I did a little tot up of calories using chat gpt as a few suggested it wasnt enough food (for a 5 and 7 year old) and for 3 fish fingers, a pile of potatoes, green beans, peas, greek yogurt with 2 bananas it was 880 calories!! The recommendation for that age range is up to 1800 calories a day depending on activity levels and size of child. Both kids are eating well over that every day.

That isn’t many fishfingers. My 2y DD eats 3 fishfingers and 5y DD eats 6

Edited

That’s ridiculous amount of food for a five year old?

Calories are not all equal especially in growing children. 3 fish figures is a poor protein serving for a meal.

Your children are telling you they are still hungry. Unless they are overweight/obese I would listen to what they are saying.

Joeydoesntsharefood25 · 06/01/2026 15:11

And it had approx 40grams of protein which is loads

Hahahaha, wait until they are mid teens. You get your grocery shop delivered for the week at 10am and by 10.30am you wonder if you even had any shopping delivered at all.

The meal overall had 40 grams of protein which is loads. Fish fingers are obviously not perfect but theyre a fine acceptable meal every so often. Especially when the rest of the diet is very good.

I find apples make me feel
starving after, no idea why, I just avoid them
now.
Ultra thick yogurt with a bit of honey is a good snack, my boys (men) love that.

I also have this. Apples make me positively hungry.
Also soup - I could eat and eat soup and never get full, no matter what's in it. I think the brain processes it differently because it's mainly liquid and soft even when I have lots of chunky veg. If I had the same ingredients but roasted and put in a wrap for example (instead of the bread) I feel so much fuller. It's like the mouth needs to chew lots to start the 'getting full' feeling.

Audhumla · 06/01/2026 15:33

Not sure what MN loves more, threads about teeny tiny adult women who eat like birds or threads about insatiable sons who never stop eating.

Sad I can't join in as my own son is a noodle in human form who eats tiny portions 😞

FlyingApple · 06/01/2026 15:40

Well it's not that substantial for hunger, it's a lot of carbs. Maybe give them more fats and proteins. Eggs, meats, creamy dishes.

Nothing wrong with fish fingers but I always cooked many and let my DC serve themselves. Any leftovers went on fish finger butties the next day (me and DH love fish ginger butties!). I never rationed them IYKWIM!

TinyCottageGirl · 06/01/2026 15:47

I would prepare for their palates to change as they reach teenage years, they might want to branch out into eating meat when many of their peers do.

My teens didn’t. We do eat meat, but not often as it’s much cheaper to make veggie dishes. My kids still go for the lentils/chickpeas/grains/tofu etc over choosing meat most days.

Really?! Both super slim children!

Maybe have a look at first steps nutrition portion size guides. X

I'm not an expert or anything but I'd do less potatos and more fish fingers

They eat so well! Sounds like such a great diet! As a tall, thin person with a speedy metabolism my whole life, I would say get some chicken into that lentil and bean soup, use whole milk and good butter, and
replace fish fingers with salmon. I think they need more animal protein with lunch and dinner. They’ll feel more satiated.

Why do they need more animal protein?

Summerunlover · 06/01/2026 17:17

I don’t have a teenage boy, I have a teenage girl and she eats!! She is never full.

Cherrytree86 · 06/01/2026 17:49

Urgh all these people saying they need meat… they are a PESCATARIAN family! They get plenty of protein. OP does NOT need to add dead animal flesh into the mix if she doesn’t want to

@Witcherwitcher

Not everyone can afford to do that though. Fish fingers are actually pretty expensive
