Later this year we are going on holiday to Canada and id like to take better photos than on my phone. I'm not super technical, but have had a Sony RX100 for about 10 years and I think I need something new.

What is a good beginner camera, to use largely as a point and shoot? With nice photos straight from the camera - I can't see myself having a ton of time for editing. I'm happy to put time in though doing a course to learn.

My budget would be up to £1k and Chatgpt have recommended Ricoh GRIII.

Would really appreciate any advice (I called our local camera shop and they didn't hide their distain for my beginner status and I'm too scared to ask on Reddit for the same reason 😂)

I'm very far from an expert but I like the Sony Alpha range. I've got a secondhand A6400 which is really good. I've also got a little Cannon Powershot with built in zoom lens for portability and that's produced some great pictures.

With phone cameras so good these days, the main advantage of a camera is its superior optical zoom, so if this is specifically for travel I would look for built in zoom as I wouldn't want to be faffing changing lenses on the go. If I had the money to upgrade I would go for one of the higher-end Powershot models for holidays.

I found the website www.photographyblog.com really good for explaining the features and performance of different cameras.

Is there a photography club you could join at your workplace or locally? I find amateur groups are very welcoming to beginners, don't let the camera shop put you off - more fool them for losing a sale!
