Mumsnet mothers have always leaned Labour. Now Reform is ahead

I'm slightly startled by this. I'm a centrist, slightly more right leaning perhaps but frankly I'm open to any government who will get a firm grip on the public finances and go about growing the economy in a sustainable way. My impression of this site is that it's definitely more left leaning and and Reform enthusiasts tend to get shouted down. Personally, I think we should be talking about them a lot more as it's highly likely they will form part of the next government.

My impression is that they are promising the earth but don't have people with the necessary skill set to make that happen. I really worry that they will get voted in and find out that they can't fix all the problems within 18 months, leading to yet more disillusionment amongst voters.

Rising support for Nigel Farage’s party — if not the man himself — may worry the government

Lol! absolutely!

But of course Farage concerned about abortion limits is more to do with his right wing views and nothing to do with womens rights.

100%.

It’s absolutely to do with women’s rights. It’s about men having control of women’s rights.

Like Labour having a woman problem e.g. telling us women have penises, seemingly ignoring the SC judgement etc, Reform put women’s rights last.

Bridget Phillipson blocking blocking rules to protect women’s safe safe spaces. Bridget Phillipson reminds me of Nigel Farage.

Phillipson blocks trans rules protecting safe spaces for women

Minister is challenging guidance that would require businesses and public bodies to offer female-only lavatories

Laila Cunningham has new policy. Banning in burqa in London. How she will do this is not obvious.

If you like a good laugh, try her interview in the Daily Telegraph as they detail her cappuccino suit and she compares herself to a Rolo.

Papyrophile · 09/01/2026 20:31

As a trend across four generations, who have all lived longer than the generations before them, I am preparing to be 90. Projecting forward 20 years, my one DC will be 46. I hope that said child will be happy, settled and thriving, with a loving family. I just don't want to be a needy relict.

EasternStandard · 09/01/2026 20:31

Denmark has banned it. Apparently Labour like to copy their policies when it comes to Mahmood talking up asylum crackdown so who knows.

It’s all great when Labour do it.

Apologies, I think I might have responded to another thread.

On topic, I think our abortion rules are pretty well balanced as they are.

Papyrophile · 09/01/2026 20:59

In my opinion, the woman is always the best person to judge. I did terminate a pregnancy. It was the result of an unserious affair and would have seriously affected the career I wanted.

Ha ha I was just scouring to find what you were replying to! Sounds interesting!

Papyrophile · 09/01/2026 21:01

As in, it would have crashed my future, forever. Still happy with the decision.

Papyrophile · 09/01/2026 21:15

No point scoring @Luddite26 , it's not going to yield a result. It was just an unwanted pregnancy, terminated within six weeks. Before the morning after pill.

Its the correct thread. A few pages back you posted about your parents and longevity.

I suspect this won't dent Reform's chances one but. Farage will be able to say the whole system is unfit for purpose, that even a party wedded to finding savings locally can't succeed.
The answer being to elect Reform nationally so they can do the hard work to liberate the country.

celticnations · 09/01/2026 23:11

Reform will cause great disquiet in the Celtic Nations & possibly even violence (esp. NI) if they tried to remove devolution. Disagree? Well, consider telling a Sinn Fein FM to pack her bags & vacate Stormont. West Belfast, bandit country & up to Derry would erupt. And Loyalists would retaliate.

Westminster needs to step back from being so jealous of their power. Pisses fowk aff, ken?

Read what Malcolm Offord said...if Scots want IndyRef2, Reform won't stop them.
Maybe it's time for English devolution.
Maybe it's time to revisit the Barnett Formula.

Yay. Just as things are really getting nasty on the world stage let's massively weaken our most vulnerable flank by splitting yet again. Brexit alone wasn't enough.

I think we have grown used to having nice neighbours to the North (at least since Stamford Bridge) people have forgotten how potentially vulnerable to attack we are from that direction. It's weird how on the one hand people are cheerfully talking about how there are no international laws get used to it etc etc. But don't think that would have a negative impact on us over the next 50 years.

We can't force Scotland to be part of the UK the way Trump wants to with Greenland. But effectively daring them to suck up whatever reform has in mind or leave seems not really in the best interests in the country. Hmmmmmm.

It wasn't me mentioning schisms, it was Celticnations.
Reform aren't proposing to go back on devolution.

How would they do that?

Councils have had funding cuts for years, to restore that level of funding so we could have lower CT but better services would cost 100s of 'billions.

Money that isn't available even if we got higher growth.... extra defence is going to cost around 100 billion to get it 5% and that, as we can all see now, is urgently required.

Though i expect defence will be the first on Tice's list to cut back.

English devolution? No thank you! I’m SO bored of Little Englanders. They were whinging a few weeks ago because Starmer is renegotiating Erasmus (yet another Brexit loss and Johnson hatchet job of an alternative) - imagine being so pathetic that you want to deny giving more opportunities for travel/study/enrichment to more of our young people.

The argument was less the concept and more the cost.

But i thought they were going to slash council waste and pass these savings on in the form of lower CT bills.....

Reality strikes.....

It's not the pitch I would have made.

Farage is running on a program of a revolution in national govt. If he gets the country moving again, then councils will have more to spend.
This isn't an opinion for me that he'll be successful, more what the idea is.

Sherbs12 · 10/01/2026 09:55

An interesting insight into opinions on possible coalitions from YouGov - obviously, still a long way from a GE. It totally ignores PC, SNP, NI parties who are tipped to have a surge, so essential to factor those in too and which way they’re likely to lean if there are coalitions forming.
