Mumsnetters voting Reform

Mumsnet mothers have always leaned Labour. Now Reform is ahead

I'm slightly startled by this. I'm a centrist, slightly more right leaning perhaps but frankly I'm open to any government who will get a firm grip on the public finances and go about growing the economy in a sustainable way. My impression of this site is that it's definitely more left leaning and and Reform enthusiasts tend to get shouted down. Personally, I think we should be talking about them a lot more as it's highly likely they will form part of the next government.

My impression is that they are promising the earth but don't have people with the necessary skill set to make that happen. I really worry that they will get voted in and find out that they can't fix all the problems within 18 months, leading to yet more disillusionment amongst voters.

Rising support for Nigel Farage’s party — if not the man himself — may worry the government

‘who’s going to pay taxes to fund your old age / train future teachers to teach your kids etc?’

That is a very very good question. It won’t be the millions of people living in council houses and on benefits, that’s for sure.

Are these the ones born here, freely educated here and still sat on their arses having failed to make any effort to improve their lot?
or others?

All of the above.

Take the benefits away so they have to work?

You should phone in Pandora. You could explain that there are now loads of 'Reformites' on MN and why they are not welcome.

Anyone can join MN. I have nothing against Reform supporters posting on MN. Doesn't mean I can't argue against their views or criticise the party they support.

Any particular reason you are hoping for this to happen?

😂 I don’t know why but that made me chuckle

Part of me wonders if it’s the persistent abuse from the some parts of the left of MN that has caused it. For a very long time, if you did not support Labour, you could expect lots of abuse, goading, insults and bullying really.

If a woman was a high earner, she’d be ripped apart for asking the most innocent of questions. This still happens actually. Try posting a genuine question about COL or choices if you’re a high earner or in a high earning household.

Ditto if you don’t agree with VAT on school fees or think welfare needs reforming. Sit back and watch the abuse and name calling. You must be truly evil and want everyone to starve.

I wonder if that has caused the tide to turn, genuinely. People who are working and are a bit disillusioned are not allowed to be. They were not allowed to discuss challenges around immigration in their area without abuse. They were not allowed to discuss issues around tax, welfare or earnings without fear of abuse.

Now they are as Labour support has crashed so much that pretty much everyone has a grievance to air.

I don’t think the way Labour behave has helped no. That includes the politicians but also the attacks online personal and otherwise.

It’s interesting that mnhq is putting out a press release on this and doing radio, it’s more than I hear usually. And that the media is covering it.

I won’t be voting for Reform as their pro Russia, anti Europe stance is the opposite of mine. But I think they would be useful in a coalition govt with the Tories (most likely outcome I think) as they would add much needed pressure in the most critical areas.

Foodbanks are sad. I liked the UK far better before we had them. It was a better and kinder place.

It's better we have them than not (I obviously don't mean I think it's great to have foodbanks at all) Before there were foodbanks, people went hungry and were too ashamed to ask for help. But the need has always been there.

Well quite. Telling people they were far right for
wanting the grooming gangs investigation is one example.

Many of them can’t even bring themselves to say ‘grooming gang’ and when they do it’s with this awful fleeting look of contempt, or with invisible speech marks.

Corbyn and Your Party haven’t mentioned it once - not ever. He did post about Gisele Pelicot though, a woman from a completely different country where presumably the majority of the rapists were white.

He’s a despicable man who would see women chained up and sold in the name of ‘racial harmony’

Reform are pro-SAHPs, which makes a very refreshing change. They also appear to be able to decisively define what a woman is. Also a refreshing change!

So much didn’t help. But it is interesting that despite best efforts pro Labour has turned people off voting for them even on here.

“Freely educated”?? You’re a bit out of date. Especially when talking about the need for skills. The reason why no one wants to train up to be a health professional any more is that the qualifications costs an arm and a leg, every new band requires more qualifications, and the wages do not reflect those qualifications or the need for the job. Plus the working conditions are shit. In my trust we are currently cutting down on jobs. There are plenty of band 3s who would make good nurses who are not going to bother due to the cost and responsibility v wages: most youngsters (and us older ones tbf) are desperately scrabbling around looking for something that will pay the cost of living.

The ones doing nothing are the smart ones at the moment. Working does not improve your lot, that’s the problem. Only inheritance and family connections matter now.
