Why is it always in the middle of the night that I decide to sort my life out?

And then by the morning, I have no lust for life at all. Is there anyone else like this? I feel so much more productive and positive at night.

Just opened my laptop and decided I am going to:

redo my CV
try and get a new job
sign up to the rebel finance course
quit vaping
order carpet Samples
lose a stone
try running

I will wake up tomorrow, and most likely do none of these things, and repeat the cycle tomorrow night!

I know the feeling

I went to bed early after a very unproductive day and now feel much perkier! This isn't the middle of the night to me though

ResusciAnnie · 04/01/2026 00:39

Yes I’m the same. Is this the only time of day you get headspace - that’s the reason for me.

WinterWooliesBaa · 04/01/2026 00:42

Yep, another one here!!

DeanStockwell · 04/01/2026 00:45

I think it's because it's quiet so you have more time to process and think about stuff , then in the morning the normal work / life / bills / dcs take up all your thought space.
Atm I am waiting for 2 curries and a pan of chicken stock I have made to cool down so I can bag and frezze them .

Infracat · 04/01/2026 00:48

Me too. Its so annoying.

overthinkersanonnymus · 04/01/2026 00:52

I think one of the reasons is that we don’t have anyone bothering us during the night . No boss, kids, husband to leach off of our time and energy, I feel like now would be the perfect time to rearrange my wardrobe.

You’re not alone!
j have, before, found myself painting the kitchen cupboards at 2am 🤣

Mydadsbirthday · 04/01/2026 01:23

Me too but I have always been like this since I was a teen so well before DC.

Busydaybadge · 04/01/2026 01:35

That's so me! My husband gets frustrated because as soon as it gets to bedtime I suddenly start writing lists, cleaning, planning to redecorate the house, filling in spreadsheets etc 😂
Yet in the morning, if he starts speaking to me about anything before I've had minimum 2 coffees I'm not interested.

overthinkersanonnymus · 04/01/2026 12:16

I can confirm, no desire to change my life during daylight hours, as expected.

@overthinkersanonnymus I live alone so I don't have any reason other than being a night owl! My brain just works better at night. Also had insomnia since I was about 13. When you are 13, you can make plans in the middle of the night and have the energy to carry them out next day. Now aged 49, not so much 😂

mikado1 · 04/01/2026 20:58

I'm the opposite - I get very anxious overwhelming things at night. Will my house fall down etc and then I'm fine in the morning but I'd also say this time of year is generally hard for get up and go despite all the New Year's resolvers out there! So make your list now if you can before bed and be kind to yourself in these dark days and do what you can bit by bit.

EmeraldRoulette · 04/01/2026 21:03

@mikado1 I don't really know what my list is and I can't be bothered to do it now

Guarantee after I've got in bed, I'll have loads of bright ideas about how to get things done more efficiently. They are actually quite good ideas to be fair. I just think it's a shame to be struck by them at 1 am or whatever.

Would you leave yourself a voice note when they come? Sounds like they need to come out!
I meant overthinking in mine, not overwhelming, tho I feel overwhelmed at 4am also!!

Isekaied · 04/01/2026 22:23

Yes same here

EmeraldRoulette · 04/01/2026 22:23

@mikado1 yeah I often do leave myself a voice note - but sometimes that just leads to more bright ideas. Then I end up writing them down or sometimes even just actually doing them then and there.

It sounds like you get morning anxiety - you have my sympathies, I had that for ages. I still get it if anything is going on. But obviously it makes sense to have it when there's stressful stuff going on. It's really annoying when nothing is happening and you just get it anyway!

PorkPieForStarters · 04/01/2026 22:34

This is me too and I think it's because there aren't as many distractions/external stimuli at night.

I've definitely been known to carry out plans when the idea or motivation strikes late at night, but have realised that getting decent sleep helps me function better (who knew?!) so I try to prioritise that more now but it means I either forget or lose interest by morning, which is annoying!

I have ADHD, btw.

ultracynic · 04/01/2026 22:37

It’s me too. I’ve just posted on a wardrobe thread a few minutes ago and got all motivated that the sort out shall commence tomorrow. It probably won’t.

Edited

I've realised my period is due tomorrow and that's what gets me really anxiously overthinking all my life decisions... it's hellish. Then I checked the date and can relax a little
