No processed meat

Hi, I’m looking for some inspiration! Sandwich filling ideas that don’t contain any processed meat. I usually like ham and cheese but don’t want to eat ham or pepperoni etc. not a huge fan of a chicken sandwich.

Any ideas? TIA and so sorry for such a mundane post but I need inspiration!

Chips

JoyeuxNarwhal · 03/01/2026 11:25

My go to work lunch is a kale and cottage cheese wrap. Sometimes add sliced mushrooms or a few walnuts.

Bangersndmash · 03/01/2026 11:25

Thank you for the sarcasm honey. I hope you have the day you deserve @Chocolatemasculinity

@Chocolatemasculinity's suggestion is way better than mine Grin

Bangersndmash · 03/01/2026 11:27

@JoyeuxNarwhal thanks for the suggestion, I’ve never really tried cottage cheese. Something I might do. I’m looking for something filling as well really. Do you have anything else with the cottage cheese or just kale?

Look at online supermarket sandwiches and see what combinations you could make at home. Also subs instead of bread to mix things up

My personal favourites are
Egg mayo
Tuna and mayo, tuna and sweetcorn
Peanut butter with a smear of jam.
Chicken and a dab of chutney.
Shredded lettuce with everything in a wrap.

Jellycatspyjamas · 03/01/2026 11:29

I sometimes do a ham at the weekend and slice the leftovers for sandwiches, obviously the ham has been processed but not the same as the reformed sandwich ham. I do the same if I have a Sunday roast, thinly sliced roast beef or lamb leftovers. Any sliced meat in packets will have been processed so using leftovers from main meals is the way to go if you want to avoid that.

TeaAndStrumpets · 03/01/2026 11:30

Tuna fish, egg mayo, cucumber. Organic nut butters.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/01/2026 11:30

Tuna and cucumber. I’ve never understood tuna and sweetcorn - to me the flavours just don’t ‘go’.

Smoked salmon (packs of trimmings are cheaper) and cream cheese, with a little lemon juice.

YuleLogsAndEggNog · 03/01/2026 11:30

Grated cheese mixed with grated carrot and a little spring onion ....use a little Greek yogurt (or mayo) to bind. Lovely in a wrap with spinach.

stealthninjamum · 03/01/2026 11:30

I have largely stopped eating processed meats and cut down on bread but I have the odd open sandwich with

  • tuna mayo and jalapeno
  • egg mayo with whatever green stuff I have lying around (cress, rocket)
  • humus and peppers
  • cream cheese and cucumber

any meat leftovers. I know you say not chicken but if it’s because it’s dry would you have leftover roast chicken with mayo and sweetcorn or cranberry sauce

Home made humous in a wrap with lettuce and other salad veg?

DS used to make a sandwich which is way tastier than it sounds - cream cheese with finely sliced matchsticks of carrot, cucumber (no seeds) rocket and a bit of either iceberg or little gem, with black pepper, on wholemeal or seedy bread. It sounds boring but somehow it isn't.

If you roast beef or pork for Sunday lunch, could you cut some very fine slices to have with horseradish or piccallili and salad leaves?

Do you not like chicken because it is too dry? If so, could you chop it up and stir it into some greekyoghurt and mango chutney with a teaspoon of mild curry spices to make a sort of healthy coronation chicken, and add some shredded lettuce?

Classic egg mayo with cress and black pepper?

Jugendstiel · 03/01/2026 11:37

A sandwich shop near where I used to work did a divine sandwich: granary bread with lemon mashed avocado, chopped walnuts and salad. I had it almost every day when I worked there.

Blushingm · 03/01/2026 11:37

Egg

miamo12 · 03/01/2026 11:38

roast a piece of pork shoulder on a Sunday for lunch/dinner then use the leftover meat for sandwiches, added bonus is it’s cheaper than buying sliced processed meat at well (also beef is great but obviously more expensive)

miamo12 · 03/01/2026 11:39

And for chicken, mix chunks in with mayo, cranberry sauce and lumps of sage and onion stuffing

Happytap · 03/01/2026 11:40

Houmous and grated carrot is delicious with lots of black pepper
Chickpea and red onion mashed up with mayo with salad
Butter beans and sum dried tomatoes

Wishing you well in this - processed meat is definitely best avoided

mbosnz · 03/01/2026 11:41

I love leftover lamb, with red onion, lettuce and mayo.

Tuna and mayo.

Roasted sweetpotato with chicken, and lettuce.

Cheese, lettuce, tomato and cucumber.

Mashed boiled egg with lettuce, and tomato.

Poached egg and chives.

Asparagus and mayo.

Spinach, grated carrot, beetroot and tuna.

Plankton89 · 03/01/2026 11:42

Hummus and spinach
coronation chickpeas
cheese and red onion marmalade

EveryKneeShallBow · 03/01/2026 11:46

Put small bits of leftover meat from Sunday into a food processor with some stuffing. Add an egg and lots of herbs. Pack the resulting mince well in a loaf tin and place a weight on top. Cook it for about 25 minutes until the egg is cooked and you have a loaf. Chill and slice thinly for an excellent alternative to processed meats. If you are creative with the spicing you can change the profile to something like a chorizo with smoked paprika, a curry spiced loaf etc.

Rockfordpeach · 03/01/2026 11:49

I love king prawns with avocado

Our local farm shop does sliced cooked meat with nothing added, just vacuum packed so i pick up those for sandwiches

Bangersndmash · 03/01/2026 12:35

Oooh thank you some good ideas to try. And yes a few of you are bang on I find chicken dry sometimes so will try a few alternatives.

Currently going through chemo and was told to avoid processed meat. Would love a big fat sausage and egg sandwich!

Hummus and pesto and a touch of gochujang paste are a good way to juje up plain cheese and chicken and salad sandwiches.

FollowSpot · 03/01/2026 12:48

Lidl do Prosciutto that is pork and sat only, no nitrates etc - does that count?

I like:
Red Leicester with a bit of lime pickle
Cream cheese with peppery watercress
Squashed felafels with hummus
Cold fish fingers with tartar sauce (but do FF count as processed?)

FollowSpot · 03/01/2026 12:50

For the salty hit of a hot sausage sandwich try halloumi. Our veggie camping friends substitute this for the obligatory bacon sandwiches.
